The Killin Youth Hostel is situated on the edge of the village opposite the caravan park. It's a good ten- to fifteen-minute walk into town past beautiful old stone houses. The hostel is also an old Victorian two-story house that is fairly modern inside. It is neat and clean enough but seems to lack a homey, lived-in feel.
The common areas are large with lots of seating and plenty of space for cooking. The kitchen has a lot of some things, like teapots, but is missing some necessities such as a usable can opener. The dining room is adjacent to the kitchen but appears rather unused with the majority of the Ikea-style chairs piled in the corners. The lounge has a more welcoming dining table as well as lounge chairs and a fireplace (probably unused) with windows that open out to the front and side of the hostel.
There are several rooms upstairs and downstairs with some being available for private/family rooms for an extra pound each. Upon check-in, you receive your usual complicated bedsheet which is too short for most people and causes a night of wrestling around unwrapping your body.
In the reception area there is one computer with coin-operated internet access, but it is quite expensive. There are also maps and pamphlets for the area and information for hiking in the surrounding mountains. The town also has an information centre that is hidden in the folk museum near the bridge over the beautiful river that cascades over the rocks at the opposite end of town to the SYHA. Rooms need to be vacated by 9:30 a.m. and the reception opens from 5 p.m.
