The Hostelz.com Review
Beach Shack was once a very large house and has been turned into a fully functional hostel, but still retains that homely feel. The decor is bright and inviting and the hostel is very clean.

The Location

The Beach Shack is located about ten minutes' drive from the bus dropoff point. It is a short walk from the main shop areas, bars, and cafes. It's a small, quiet town and it's very easy to find your way around.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Bedroom have four- and six-bed dorms and there are also twin and double rooms. There are no locks on the doors of the bedrooms or lockers available so you have to be careful with your valuables, but we were reassured that it was very safe and we did not experience and problems. Aircon is in every room but this is turned on from 8 p.m. through to 8 a.m., however if it's too cold there are duvets on all beds. Some rooms come with TVs and DVD players at no extra charge. There are three bathrooms in the hostel all kept clean and tidy.

Common Spaces

There is a communal TV area with full cable TV and you can also rent DVDs from the massive DVD collection for a small price. The area is comfortable with large sofas. The kitchen is well equipped and has an oven and BBQ for use. It is kept very tidy and are quite strict on people not tidying up after themselves. There is also free tea and coffee on offer. The tropical pool is very inviting and has adequate seating areas in and outside the hostel. The laundry can be found near the pool. There is cheap, fast internet on-site, and a room where you can play pool for free.

Summary

The hostel is very nice to stay in and with the comfortable communal areas, it's easy to meet other travelers, and the owners are very nice and helpful too. The only downside to this hostel is that they have no updated their flier in a while, which is slightly misleading as some of the facilities that are advertised are no longer available. It's one of the more expensive hostels too -- and with the attractions offered on the flier that no longer exist, it hasn't affected the price, which seems a little unfair. This aside, the hostel is an excellent place to stay.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
5  It sure is home away from home I remember when I landed on Mission Beach looking for a hostel to stay at. I made my choice of staying at the Beach Shack after having found that it was the cheapest choice, and it turned out to be the best Hostel I have stayed at, ever. The house had a homey feeling and the owners were just wonderful! We had nice barbecues together and I felt like I was home with a bunch of wonderful friends. That was 2001, I really hope they are still the same because if I go to Oz again, it won't be without stopping by this wonderful place, and Byron Bay of course.  , Swedish ()
5  Home away from home Absolutely the best hostel we have stayed in since coming to Australia. Definite home away from home -- beds are comfy big warm duvets, two pillows, clean rooms, kitchen is so clean, beautiful shower facilities. definitely worth stopping in here, comfy couches to watch DVDs, the staff are lovely -- backpackers like us and such a laugh.  , Irish ()
