The Hostelz.com Review
Globetrotters is a conveniently located hostel north of the Liffey River. The hostel shares its building with The Townhouse Hotel. The convenient location is ideal for beginning your sightseeing in Dublin. The hostel is mainly run by older staff more suited to the hotel.
The Location
The hostel is located in a safe area, a few blocks from O'Connell Street, a major shopping street, and the Spire. The hostel is easy to find using the directions on the hostel website, with a clear sign outside. There is an Aircoach stop nearby for easy transportation to/from the airport, as well as a LUAS tram stop (Abbey St.). Connolly Station, for many trains to points outside of Dublin, is only a ten-minute walk away. Temple Bar, Dublin's famous area for nightlife, is at most a twenty-minute walk away.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The dorms are quite crowded with limited space. Six-, eight-, and twelve-bed single gender dorms are available, as well as private rooms in the Townhouse. The bunks are relatively comfortable, but the upper bunk does not leave much room, so watch your head! A reading light is provided for each bed, but the room lacks sufficient electrical outlets and lockers. The lights also automatically turn off around 11 p.m. and turn on around 8 a.m.
The en-suite bathrooms get quite busy in the morning, especially in the larger dorms, so be ready to wait. The washrooms (which include the shower) are relatively clean, but lack counter space. The showers do not provide a place to put your soap and shampoo, although there is a dispenser provided. Showers can take a few minutes to warm up but are otherwise fine. There is adequate space in the washroom to change.
Common Spaces
The hostel features a nice common room with a chess board, LCD TV, and a games table. There is also an adjacent area near the reception with seating. There are two computers that provide free internet service. The common areas are nice for being able to meet people, but the hostel does attract a bit of an older crowd and is not a party hostel. Complimentary luggage storage is available until around 8 p.m.
The best part of this hostel is the amazing Irish breakfast provided each morning. It is served in the hotel restaurant, and includes baked beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, cereals, coffee/tea, fruit, juices, and more!
Summary
The hostel overall is good. The rooms are unimpressive and need to be updated, but the common areas are well-kept. The hostel is a bit far from nightlife but is convenient for sightseeing. The breakfast is one of the best you'll ever get in a hostel, and makes staying here worthwhile.

Great Breakfast I stayed at the hostel for 5 nights, and compared with others in Dublin it was one of the cheapest. The breakfast is really good, and almost worth the price as it is. The location is ok, near a bunch of other hostels, but not in the city centre. There is free wifi and free computers to use the internet on, which is great. However there are alot of annoying points about this hostel. First is that the rooms are underground and the lights are on automatic timers, they turn on at 9am or so, and off at 11pm or so. There arent many power outlets in the room, and in some rooms they dont work at all. In the room I was in there was no door for the shower and no toilet seat. One guy got his computer stolen from the room, and the staff couldnt care less. He turned his back and swore at the guy, and then the guy behind the desk kicked him out of the hostel. I think he had paid for a bunch of nights, and he got no refund. Another guy got a book and headphones stolen, probably by the cleaning staff since no one else was in the room. Again the front desk couldnt care less. Some of the people at the front desk were nice and would help you find places etc. But there are some that think they are clearly above helping anyone. So yeah it is worth the money for the internet, the breakfast and the bed. But I probably wouldnt recommend this place for ladies since the location is odd and the bathroom is terrible. — Mike , Australia (2011-10-16)
Nice hostel, shame about the ginger comedian I arrived at this hostel after having been on a plane for 12 hours after having missed a connecting flight and a 4 hour airport delay. The place looked pretty nice on arrival, and after being buzzed in I put my luggage down and a fat ginger male appeared behind the desk. I said something to the effect that I needed a room, and was asked if I had made a booking. I said 'I believe so' as a relative had phoned up on my behalf in advance. The ginger replied, dripping with sarcasm, 'well if you don't know if you have one, I don't know how you expect me to !' with a roll of his eyes and then openly laughed as if he was dealing with a fool. As this was the first point of contact I thought this was beyond ignorant and didn't bother responding. The oaf seemed to then realise he had overstepped the mark and blew off his rudeness saying it was all good craic. It wasn't, sarcasm is the mark of every unfunny would be comedian I ever met. Ginger then booked me in, although another guy appeared in the doorway and started making small talk. After booking had been finished, I asked Ginger, who was still talking to his mate, if he could tell me or show me on a map where a hotel was where I was meant to go to meet a friend who had already arrived in Dublin. He said, I'll tell you when you come down from your room, and waved his hand as if it was inconsequential to him and turned on his heel and walked back out through the door behind the counter, more interested in the chatter of his pal. Had the booking not been made I probably would have walked out right then. Instead I went to my room, and unpacked, and then found that the tv remote was missing its batteries, and there was no toilet roll in the room. I told Ginger about both on the way out to see my friend, and he said that he would deal with it as if I was asking him for something completely unreasonable, and proceeded to deal with another check-in with the same rudeness, as if he was the king of the checkout desk putting on a show to impress his little friend. On my return I went to my room and found no batteries, and no toilet roll. I went back down and asked for the toilet roll, which I got, along with a sarcastic 'sorry' for the benefit of his 'audience' as I turned and started to walk out the check in area. Having been messed around by this idiot so much I believe I said, 'so you should be' as I walked out. He actually had the audacity to bark 'What?' after me, like he wanted a confrontation. Had it been a man in the street I might have obliged him and dumped him on his backside. If you scroll through the reviews for this hostel, you will see that most of them remark on the rudeness of the staff. Im guessing the majority refer to this blubbery mass. Seriously, globetrotters, do yourself a favour and fire this loser. He isn't helping your reputation at all. — Anonymous , Wales (2011-10-12)

Breakfast and location I've stayed in this hostel twice (2007, 2009). The best thing about it is the breakfast and that was also my main reason to go back there. The rooms are clean, although the carpets should definitely be torn out. They are ancient and filthy. And it can get very noisy in a twelve-bed dorm. But the blankets are comfy and thick, which is a plus, especially in winter. Also, the location is great and the breakfast is unbeatable. — Judith , Switzerland (2009-11-12)
Noisy and rude. Our room (not even the type we reserved) was directly underneath the kitchen (a thin wooden floor twenty-eight centimeters above the bunk bed). The noise, starting at 5 a.m., was unbearable. When I complained and asked to leave the next day (and even greed to pay for the first sleepless night after arriving at 1 a.m.), they wouldn't let me go without paying for the following two nights. Here's what they said, "You've probably been drinking. There's always noise in a shared situation! You didn't have a problem eating the breakfast!" When I explained that the noise was from above and not the roommates, they said I should have come to them when the noise started (at 5 a.m.!) and they would have moved me!" The ***hole (David) at the front desk kept saying, "There's the door if you don't like it!" They wouldn't even admit there was a room under the kitchen although the cleaning crew rolled their eyes in apology when we mentioned the room number. Don't go here! By the way, this was only the worst of about four problems. If you don't get the type of room you reserved, they blame a hostel website or just belittle you in some way. — LE , United States (2008-09-16)

Great for peace and quiet. If you want fun, go elsewhere! The place was very clean and had strict security. But the dorm rooms were way overpriced. There was no room for our backpacks, we were tripping over them all over the floor. No lockers! One bathroom for eight beds is not enough, I had to wait a while before I could shower and leave for the day. It was a full Irish breakfast, but it was still only a buffet. I think the food had been sitting around a while by the time I got there. I wish I had stayed in a hostel that was more fun and more central to the action in the middle of Dublin. — Victor , USA (2008-01-23)

Great -- Get your money's worth! Excellent! This hostel is not only clean, but even luxurious, and the beds are very comfortable. It is also safe and very centrally located, close to both the train (Connolly) and bus station. Unless you share a room with someone who snores, there are no noise issues. The only down part is that it costs a little bit more, but the reason for that is the breakfast -- not your typical hostel breakfast, but a full Irish one, with hot food and homemade baked goods. It is enough food that you won't need to eat lunch. Finally, check out the restaurant across the street (O'Shea's) for traditional Irish food. Any place that can make baked chicken, mashed potatoes, and stuffing into a culinary experience must be doing something right! — Gerry , USA (2008-01-05)

This hostel was a breath of fresh air for a six-month solo backpacker. Very centrally located and close to nightlife and bus station. Excellent breakfast, the best yet. Amazing how much is included, eggs, bacon, sausage, juice, fruit, coffee. Yum. Great way to start the day. And it is quiet at night. The rooms were nice, very clean and well maintained. The bedding is nice as well. I was really happy with this hostel. The only downsides for me were being assigned bunks and not being able to swap (I hate top bunks) even when there is another bunk that remains vacant. And having to be buzzed in all the time, i think they could find a better way, but very secure. — Paula (2007-03-24)

I like this hostel because it is centrally located. It was clean, and the beds are comfortable. The breakfast is very good (they call it full irish breakfast) and huge. The place is quite secure. There are no lockers but you can store your luggages in a secured room during the day, which can be opened only by the staff. Each dorm has an access code.
The entrance door is always locked but there is always someone at the reception that will unlock it (when you ring the bell, see below) and check if you are a guest before they let you access the dorms. The thing that was very annoying was the noise. I was in a mixed dormitory, that was located under the reception so I could hear everyone getting in. Also, in this dorm, there is a window on the street, which is near a bus stop. At night, there are always loud and drunk people waiting for their bus. That was very disturbing. As I said, to get in, you have to ring a bell, and you can hear it ringing perfectly when you are in this dorm.
I hope the other dorms are not so noisy. — Frederic (2006-07-07)

This was a great hostel. A real comfort after the past hostels that we had stayed in. The breakfast was awesome and the staff was really friendly. When and if I ever go back to Dublin, this is my number one choice!! — Anonymous (2005-07-16)

This hostel was amazing, with comfortable beds, although a bit cramped. Very clean and very safe/security conscious. There was no lockout, which was nice, and breakfast was awesome, whatever you can think of, and as much as you want! I'd definitely stay here again. Staff friendly were enough, and there's free Internet. The kitchen was very, very small. — Anonymous (2005-04-29)

This is a great-looking, clean hostel, but it has poor staff. — Anonymous (2005-04-02)
The bathrooms are disgusting. — Anonymous (2005-03-13)

This place is annoying because in some ways it is really good, and in other ways it is awful. The breakfast is great and makes up for other shortfalls to some degree, but the thing that annoyed me about this place is that somebody tried very hard with the design of the place, yet they got so many things so very wrong:
— The shelves on the side of the bed are a great idea, but they are located so they stick into you!
— The bathroom was all chrome and nice looking, but the toilets didn't have seats, the shower had absolutely nowhere private to get dry or changed (in a mixed dorm), there was barely enough room to close the toilet door, and there was no light in the loo. Yet the bathroom sink area was HUGE and had plenty of space to have enlarged the toilet/shower cubicles.
— The lights are controlled by reception, which is fine as there are reading lights on every bed and floor lights, but they neglected to turn them off on (or near) 11 p.m. when they were supposed to. One night they were on till 1: 30 a.m.!
— There were no power points [electrical outlets] in the rooms.
— They let you use the kitchen, but give you absolutely no implements to use with it except the breakfast dishes.
The location is good. The night guy at reception is a HUGE asswipe, as several other people have said.
I would stay there again because it's cheap and the breakfast is good, but if I weren't going to get up for breakfast, I'd stay somewhere else. — T & B (2005-01-28)

Near to the city center, nice staff, very good breakfast, clean rooms — an excellent hostel! — Anonymous (2005-01-14)

This hostel is awesome. It is neat, clean and very central. The breakfast is the best, especially after a night in the Temple Bar! We fully recommend this hostel and we will definitely be staying here again. — Kate & Karen (2004-10-24)
