The Hostelz.com Review
Guimaraes Youth Hostel is a five-star hostel. Not only is it spotlessly clean, spacious, and friendly, but there is a full kitchen with a big fridge, several dining rooms, a terrific breakfast, a large patio, plenty of bathrooms and showers, no end of hot water, game tables, large-screen TV, CD and radio, and there's even a free washer and dryer (just bring your own detergent). Internet service with two dozen computers is available at one Euro per hour right behind the hostel.

Once you find the place (which is the only hard part of staying there), you'll realize it's in a terrific location, just a few blocks from the Tourism Office, the parks, the old part of town with its palace, museums, and castle, and all the night life in the world. Guimaraes is a university city, and it buzzes with life and energy -- bars, cafes, fountains, and festivals. Vitality infuses every block and spills over into the hostel. It's a large hostel catering to an always-changing crowd -- mostly college kids and twentysomethings, but there are older couples in the double rooms and the odd professor, writer, or artist to be found over breakfast.

It's so large that there are also quiet spaces for reading, and the acoustics are such that it isn't even noisy when it's full of people and some are playing pool or foosball. Drinks are available cheaply, as is bottled water, and there's no lock-out, no curfew, nothing to cramp anybody's style. It's hard to imagine how it could be any better.

5  More that expected! It's definitely a hidden gem -- don't go for it unless you have a GPS or a detailed map print in your pocket. But you would be much (pleasantly) surprised as soon as you get in there -- it's more like a hotel. Definitely worth considering if you ever get to Guimaraes.  ()
5  Great location, superbly decorated, very friendly staff I was here for one night and thought that it was a great hotel. Shame that it was basically empty. Guimaraes deserves more tourists because it's a lovely city. Well worth a day or two. You can't go wrong with this well priced hostel.  , British ()
