The Hostelz.com Review
Hostal Los Amigos is the place to stay for the younger crowd heading to Tikal. There are lots of beds, a delicious veggie restaurant, and plenty of advice for onward travel.

The Location

The hostel is almost in the middle of the island -- the only thing it lacks is a lake view. Most shuttles, taxis, or tuc-tucs can drop you at the door (it's the bright red building). If you are walking from the bridge head toward the central square and it's to the right on the second street you will cross. The island is not very big so the shops, restaurants, and good swimming are all close. Don't be fooled -- Tikal isn't the only thing in this area and Flores itself is well worth spending some time in.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Different grades of dorms and rooms (some with hot water) are available as well as an area for hammocks. Some of the areas are a bit rough around the edges but there are continuous improvements on the go. The dorms are quite big but don't have much natural light and are a little dark. There are plenty of fans which is definitely necessary in Peten. The bathrooms are fine and fairly clean. There isn't hot water in most of them but nine times out of ten is you'll want the coldest shower possible.

Common Spaces

The common areas centre around the restaurant. Some travelers may be put off by the fact that no meat is served, but don't be -- what is on offer is absolutely delicious. There are a lot of places to sit and attempt (usually unsuccessfully) to escape the heat. There is a hammock area and two TVs with a huge range of documentaries to watch. There are plenty of lockers to keep your stuff safe and even some with plug points, which is ingenious. There is no kitchen though so you'll be relying on restaurants during your stay.

Summary

Hostel Los Amigos has a great atmosphere (don't expect late nights though because most people will be leaving on the 4:30 Tikal tour), good food, and is well thought out. They also offer plenty of travel info and good prices on tours too.

1  Money Money Money Please dont stay in this hostel, Local business's are suffering because of it. We stayed there for 2 nights -- most expensive hostel in Town, most expensive bar in Town and among the most expensive restaurants in town. We payed 90Q for a private -- theres 3 toilets in the hole hostel and 4 showers (3 because 1 is broke). During HAPPY HOUR a Litro is 35Q its 25Q in nice restaurant down the road and most meals are 50Q. We checked out today. check out time is 10am -- cleaning lady knocked on our door at 9.15 to asking us to pay for another night, then waited outside our room until 10am till we checked out. Also when tried to exchange a book in their book exchange it had to be ok'd by 2 members of staff behind the bar! (What the fook its a hostel dudes.) We just moved into a nice local hostel in Flores -- beautiful views of the lake, private for 70Q, hot water and private bathroom and super fast wireless.  , Ireland ()
1  Great interior design, cash-crazy owner When I visited in 2008, the staff was friendly, smiling and generally helpful, although a bit too disorganized. Then, I went back in May, 2010 with my pregnant wife. We chose to stay in the dorm, because private rooms cost 45Q per person (shared cold water bath, dirty towels, roaches under the bed). We packed up next morning to move on, and while I was still talking to others in the lobby, my wife became a bit sick and sat down on the bed she was sleeping in. Matthias, the owner came in and told her in a really rude English that she should stand up or pay for another night, since the bed is already made, waiting for the next customer. And can't you read; he asked my wife, there was a paper on the bed saying pay or leave. The nicest thing about the whole situ was that my wife speaks only Spanish. Others in the room tried to defend her, and were told they can leave too. Seems like fame and money changes people for worse.  , USA ()
1  Great ambiance and price, extremely poor staff I stayed in this hostel for one night the summer of '09 and although the beds were nice and clean and there were big lockers (score!), I ended up leaving due to terrible staff. I work in hospitality at home, so I really don't expect much and really rarely bother the staff, but the people working here were crazy! I don't think I ever saw one of them smile, and every time they were asked for something, they acted as if it was the biggest inconvenience to them. I used the internet here one night and motioned to the girl that i was starting. She nodded, and I used it for a while. When I went to pay, she asked how long I had used it. Since I hadn't timed myself, I said I didn't know. She then asked me "You mean you don't know?"as if I was crazy. Then I guessed forty-five minutes, maybe more (exact words), and then she literally pointed in my face and said "You used it for an hour!" I had said I didn't know, so I didn't understand why she was so upset. Also, if you decide to stay here, note that there is no hot water, and definitely read the rules that are posted behind the door of your room, because they are extremely stringent and make no exceptions. I even paid for another night here which I decided not to use because I didn't want to interact with the staff again.  , United States ()
5  Super cheap, friendly, helpful, wonderful veggie food Los Amigos is a wonderful place to stay and hang out or pass through. The food is fantastic, the beds are cheap, and you can easily make travel arrangements through the helpful staff. When I passed through the first time I was off to travel for another week and asked if I could rent a locker to store some stuff. The owner lent me a locker for a week for free, which was really kind of him. I've stayed there twice now and have nothing but good things to say. Oh, and the bunk beds are comfy, which can be rare.  , USA ()
