The Hostelz.com Review
BVJ Louvre is also known as "Centre Internacionales de Paris". The location of this hostel is great. It is in a very commercial neighborhood with lots of shopping and restaurants nearby. There is a laundromat across the street. It is 2-3 blocks from the Louvre. Rue de J.J. Rousseau intersects with Rue St. Honore.

The rooms are somewhat dark and lack ventilation, which is especially noticeable after someone showers. Showers and sinks are in the rooms, though both are push button, which proves annoying when it takes a long time for hot water to run. There is no closet, not even any hooks or rods to hang towels are so towels remain wet. The mattresses are thinner than my fist and very hung through the middle, more like a hammock than a bed. The hostel staff doesn't know how many beds need to be changed so ask if you need clean sheets. Rooms are generally single sex.

This hostel books large groups (of both American and French student tours) who are often quite noisy. Therefore, while friendly, it is not a very social hostel. There are, however, two large common rooms, one of which allows smoking. There are both a luggage room and lockers but no one seems to watch them. Internet access is available on the premises.

2 Ruined my holiday
BVJ Hotel -- do not stay here unless you wish for your holiday to Paris to be ruined! I actually left Paris four days early because of it, totally uncomfortable. My bag was stolen off the bus from London, I gave the security guy the hotel's phone number should any developments happen. They called the hotel when my bag was returned, and the guy at the front desk seemed rather pissed off that I'd given the telephone number out -- a real inconvenience for them, not me! Showers are fun -- they last about three seconds before you have to push the button again for more water. Makes hair washing a fun time. Lukewarm as well, so the whole shower ritual is just miserable in winter. Especially after pounding the pavements of Paris! The worst, there is nothing on the website to say this, nor in corresponding emails, but you must check in and out every day. Chances of getting the same room are pretty low. Which means you have to pack up and get out every morning before heading out for the day, dragging everything down the stairs because the manager is so pissy about anyone using the lift on the ground floor! Then leave your stuff in the back office/ luggage room for the day, then drag it all upstairs again that night. Absolutely ridiculous. I want a holiday, where I can unpack and unwind without stressing about this. I was so disgusted by it all. The only good thing about this place is the free breakfast. The guy working the kitchen is charming and nice to have at least one person in the hotel smile at you! Big bowls of coffee or hot chocolate provided, amazingly soft bread rolls, cereals, eggs, juice. Stuff yourself before going out to save on food for the day!

4 It's more than only facilities
i know this hostel has no warm blanket, or really fresh shower (because it always stopped every five minutes). i know it's only a bowl of hot chocolate, fresh juice, lots of baguette, and not luxury breakfast. the stairs really made me tired because they have no porter to help. and the worst, not allowed to smoke inside the hostels. but, the experience inside, with the bugs in our blanket, the meeting with people around the world, and of course the really cheap money i have to pay, make my experience in paris had colours. this hostel is more than enough.

3 Ok place, great location
I read most of the reviews before I came, and I was ready to expect the worse. The downsides -- the front desk staff was rude and they took their sweet time to check us in (we waited about an hour). Also pay attention to the booking procedures, they can be a bit complicated. Once we got our room, we had to climb four flights of stairs, a spiral staircase, and a ladder to get to our beds. For any of you who are concerned with fire safety, I wouldn't advise this hostel. The showers were also pretty bad too, but they weren't unbearable. The plus sides -- we couldn't ask for a better location. It was close to two metro stops, but we mostly walked to all the major sites in Paris. I recommend it solely on the location. The breakfast was also phenomenal. There was plenty of food, and the staff in the kitchen was great. (just bring your tray back to the line when you bring your food to the table.)

1 Hopeless! Totally hopeless. Didn't have our booking -- after confirming it twice. Was rude and dismissive. Will never, ever, ever recommend anyone to stay here.

5 I love this place! The staff is really nice and kind, and the best of best is location! To Musee du Louvre, three minutes on foot! Breakfast is very good (I really like this, so every morning I ate fresh baguette, many kinds of jams, juice, cereal!) but the room is very small and simple (just Dual-Layer Iron Bed and sink in the room). If I will go to Paris again, I must stay here again! Recommend!

1 This place would have been all right were it not for the totally dodgy records system they have and the nonexistent security. You can book via email but it's not reliable because they only keep their records on flimsy pieces of paper that even the reception staff can't read properly. We turned up for a three-night stay and they said they had no record of our booking and wouldn't be able to keep us for three nights. We managed to hassle them enough to ensure we could stay, but it was a pain in the ass. The security is frighteningly bad, with a group of yobbos storming our room at 4:30 a.m. and spraying people with mace and stuff. They were yelling loud enough for everyone in the building to hear, but the staff only turned up an hour later, after they had gotten bored and went to harass the girls' rooms. They were still hanging around at 9 a.m. before finally they got kicked out, which is ridiculous. Their facilities are poor, and they don't have bath towels or any other accessories you'd expect. Only go here if you're desperate and a park bench is the only other option.

1 This hostel was absolutely awful. It was filled with twelve- to fourteen-year-olds running around at all hours of the night while screaming and yelling. The staff for the most part was friendly, however there was one very rude lady who would talk very rudely to you. We called from the airport to ask for directions and she would only speak in french (which we don't speak) and kept asking if we understood. when we said no, she would just say "ok?" and keep on repeating what she had just said. She told us to get on the train from the airport, and funny thing was..the airport that we flew into had no train station! She had no idea what she was talking about. Very annoying. The rooms were very dirty with dirt on the walls, and the beds were very uncomfortable. Very, very uncomfortable. You could feel yourself sinking to the springs on the bottom of the bed. Some of the beds were covered in a lining that sounded like you were sleeping in a diaper. The pillows looked like they were a bunch of cotton balls put into a pillowcase. Very horrible. All in all, this hostel was so gross, loud, and too expensive for what you sleep in. The push button shower was horrible as well. You have to push it every five seconds and the showers were very dirty every single day. I don't think they cleaned it by any means. The floor we stayed on only had one toilet and one shower for about sixteen people which was quite the wait when you wanted them. The only good thing was the location (about a ten-minute metro ride to the eiffel tower) and the louvre is two minutes' walking distance. Shopping mall is only a couple of minutes away as well. All in all, horrible hostel, wouldn't go back ever, and wouldn't reccommend to anyone.

4 This hostel is a great location in terms of walking distance to the sights, even the eiffel tower is within forty minutes! However, unlike the vibrant Montmartre area (where I also stayed for a few nights), the area didn't have much personality. Rooms are simple and the beds uncomfortable but were nice and clean. There is no lift so I had to carry my twenty-two kilogram bag up five flights of stairs! Breakfast is really good with huge bowls of coffee, cereal, and fresh baguettes. The staff are lovely and very helpful. From my experience it's definitely not a social hostel but would recommend it.

3 The location of this hostel is fabulous! It is close to many of the major sites in Paris and the rest are a short Metro ride away. The staff is friendly and very helpful. The only bad thing is it is not very clean -- mainly the floors look like they are swept maybe every two months, and the showers are dank and some of the push buttons you have to hold the whole time. They could also use moore hooks or shelves for your stuff. Also the breakfast is not so great, I do not recommend the coffee.

5 I stayed here for four nights in April, 2006. BVJ is perfect in you wanna stay somwhere that is clean, comfty, has a great atmosphere and where you can meet interesting people of your age from all over the world. i LOVED the breakfasts, and i totally miss the massive bowl of chocolat chaud they give you. Its a 2min walk from Les Halles (the best shopping place in Paris)and is surrounded by laundries and takeaway shops and things to make it that much more conveniant. Highly recommended!!

5 ABSOULTELY FANTASTIC!!! I am Vicky's sister - she also left a comment on this page about her stay in 2004. I stayed in this youth hostel in April 2006 and I have to say it was the best youth hostel I have ever stayed in!!! Located right in the centre of everything; this hostel boasted a fantastically friendly atmosphere with people visiting from all over the world. The communal area downstairs was a great way to meet new people too. Our Australian group enjoyed our stay here so much!!! It was definitely the highlight of our trip. 5 STARS!!!

2 I stayed in the BVJ in the Latin Quarter for a week at the end of June till July 2005 (this is my last day in Paris today). I was told it would be better than the BVJ Louvre. Here are my warnings to you about the Latin Quarter: 1 They take reservations but do not hold them or honor them. My travel companion and I arrived from London having done as instructed on the Web site — booked more than 2 months ahead (in French!) and checked the booking 3 days prior to arrival. Yet when we arrived they told us they had nothing. We had booked a room with two beds. They stuck us in an all-male dorm with 10 beds. They did not tell me it was all male but it became obvious that it was when I walked in and the first thing I saw was a naked man taking a shower in the shower in the room, which had no door or shower curtain. Needless to say I showered in my swimmers!! The dorms are pretty grotty and very stuffy. The shower in the dorm I was staying in had a clogged drain, which made it seem like you were white water rafting; disgusting. 2 Each day they make you check out before 10 or re book your room before 9 a.m. — but they do not guarantee you a room and you will probably have to change rooms each morning or maybe book into another hostel. Such a pain... the poor people working on reception bear the brunt of the assaults from unhappy guests, so no wonder they're on edge!!! They do not let you book for several nights. You have to re book your accommodation each morning!!! What a joke!! 3 Breakfast is good — bread, juice, big coffees, cornflakes and you can have as much as you want. 4 The single bedrooms on the top floor with odd numbers are the best — airy, with their own showers and basins but shared toilets. They have a nice big window overlooking the street. 5 The BVJ seems like the heart of Christendom — they don't like couples and we met other couples who had been seemingly conveniently split up or put into all male dorms — kills the romance a bit! 6 This place has really bad security — anyone can basically walk in and take things because there are no locks in the dorms and the card system is not enforced. Lock you bag to your bed and lock up your zips when you're in and when you're out. I still had a good time in Paris because of the people I met and the places I visited. But be warned about the BVJ — if you can.

4 I wish the walls were a little bit better soundproofed. Can't complain about the W.C. [bathroom] or Douches [showers]. It is Paris. Great location for museumgoers and fashion shoppers. Would be awesome if the breakfast served was more than cornflakes, yogurt, and coffee. Especially if a person is lactose-intolerant. I will gladly stay here again but in warmer conditions. The cold water from the showers will be less severe.
