The Hostelz.com Review
Pop Hostel Madrid is a funky place (which in this case, doesn’t necessarily mean “cool”) on a typical big city block, not too far from the sites and sounds of Spain’s capital city. Though the overall impression isn’t completely bad, there are some issues that should be immediately taken care of.

The Location

This hostel is situated on the second floor of the building, above a fish market. There is no sign for the hostel. There is simply a business card taped to the directory at the door. Upon arriving, you will be buzzed in, and upon walking up the stairs, you will smell the strong odor of fish. Fortunately, the smell disappears once you enter the hostel itself. The hostel is located near the Gran Via, Madrid’s main drag. You can access most of Madrid, and all tourist areas, via the Metro. The Tribunal stop is quite close to the hostel. The main plazas are also walkable from the hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are dormitories with bunk beds, which are are creaky and make a bit of noise when you move around in them. Unfortunately, bedbugs have also been found in the beds. One tenant who had been there for a week had noted that they hadn’t changed his sheets once during his stay, which doesn’t help the problem. Bathrooms are ensuite, with the toilet and shower in the same room. The water pressure is never an issue and the water is always hot when needed. There is one set of keys for each room to be shared among all of the guests inside, whether or not they know each other. So, if one guest walks out and forgets to leave the keys, you need to ask the attendant to help you in. The reasons why they won’t make more keys are a bit perplexing, as keys aren’t expensive, even in Spain.

Common Spaces

There are two common areas -- one is more or less a computer room, and the other is a TV lounge. The Wi-Fi signal is weak almost everywhere in the hostel. There is only one table in the computer room, which has a strong signal, and it is nonexistent in the TV lounge. Even the hostel's free computers fail to pick up the signal most of the time. There is no printer, so if you need to print a boarding pass, you will be directed to a local store. You should make sure you do this during business hours -- this is Spain, so the store keeps Spanish hours. There is a free breakfast served, which includes bread, butter, jam, cereal, milk, coffee, and tea. It’s about the most minimal breakfast you might be offered at a hostel, but it’s there.

Summary

Other then the bedbugs and bad Wi-Fi, all is well at the Pop Hostel, until you consider the disco in neighborhood. Starting at 11 p.m., you will hear a “thump thump thump” on Fridays and Saturdays until 7 a.m. It isn’t completely overwhelming, but it is definitely there and if you are a light sleeper, you may wish to avoid this place. If you keep Spanish hours and you go out at night to party and don’t return until the next morning, it shouldn’t be an issue.

4  Nice! first hostel i ever stayed in. it was kind of a strange area, but as far as just a place to stay it was nice. the staff were friendly and helpful! there was a nice area for sitting and get to meet some cool people, although most everyone i met were only interested in partying all night BUT this is madrid. there were safes, you just need your own lock. overall pretty good.  , USA ()
4  Nice hostel! It was a little hard to find, but once we did, we checked in, the staff were really, really friendly! Unfortunately, there was no hot water at all for the two nights that we stayed in Madrid, but the receptionist was really apologetic, and took 10% off our stay, and also informed us that we could walk down the street to another hostel if we wanted hot showers. I felt bad for the poor guy, it was obviously not his fault the water didn't work! Breakfast was nice, (cereal, toast, coffee, tea), and it was cool to have free internet. The place was pretty clean, and there were two kitchens to use. Kitchens weren't the cleanest, we saw cockroaches, but then again, we've also seen worse! All in all, it's a good deal for the price -- I'd recommend it!  , Canada ()
