A good option if you're going to Savannah
I only needed a room overnight, and the owner was helpful when i was checking in. the room wasn't air conditioned, (though i believe it's available) but it wasn't a hot night and i was comfortable. The bunk bed was comfortable and i was provided with clean linens. There was a kitchen available and a grocery store right across the street, which i didn't need this trip, but it's there if you need it. The bathroom was clean. Overall i'd say it was a good experience and i will most likely stay there again when i go back to Savannah.

Good Experience
The hostel is in a great location. I had a good experience and an enjoyable stay. The only negative comment I have is that you must leave from 12 to 5. I have never stayed at another hostel where you couldn't come back to your room for such an extended period of time. Other than that, I had a pleasant stay.

Very clean building and very helpful owner
I had not the slightest idea what to expect. To my surprise had the most delightful stay. A lovely antique house with huge ceilings and a fine view of a courtyard where I had access to walk around. There were so many Red Cardinals singing it was brilliant. A few blocks away are the squares that are breathtaking. Who cares if the rooms are not complete with phones and TV -- this is a beautiful city to walk and explore. Hope very much to visit Savannah again.

No services provided!
I have stayed at many Hostels and don't expect "five star" service(s). I do expect at least a phone for local calls, internet access as well as a place to cook (at least a microwave and a coffee pot). There are plenty of "Dorm Beds" available but instead he chose to put me in a "Private Room" for $50 per night. I was also informed that I could not be within said pension between the hours of noon and 5 p.m. If you smoke be prepared to open a window and crawl out for balcony access. Only decent thing was its location, supermarket also close by. Personally I will never even consider staying here again. I was so displeased that I departed Savannah the next day!

I admit -- having read some of the negative reviews (and traveling by myself) -- I was somewhat hesitant about staying in this hostel. However, I found it to be a positive experience. The owner was extremely nice and hospitable; he even gave me money back when a second guest arrived stayed in my room. I paid $30. The bathroom was clean, the location extremely convenient, and I felt very comfortable. It is a somewhat stark environment -- he obviously doesn't make much effort to make the place feel like a "home," but overall I was very pleased. I would recommend the restaurant/cafe on Park Avenue (directly across from Forsyth Park, next to health food store) for coffee/tea/excellent food. It's about four blocks from hostel.

it's changing from being a hostel to being a pension -- single rooms and slightly more expensive. cheapest forty dollars up to sixty dollars. you can't reserve the price on the room and then it depends if someone has already taken it. I don't know about the other rooms, but the fifty dollar one is lovely. balcony and all. view on the local kroger supermarket in the distance across a square covered in trees. the evening becomes interesting too with the mixture of middle class and the weird classes wondering its streets. the other lovely thing about it -- if you arrive by car -- that you don't have to pay parking as you would have to in the rest of the city. it's south enough to be out of the tourist area, though the neighbourhood, if renovated, would rival the northern part of the city easily.

I spent a weekend here after leaving south Louisiana post Katrina. This is a beautiful Victorian bi-level double unit townhouse. The owner was very friendly and was nice enough to give me a tour of entire house and a brief history. This house has not been butchered like most comparable examples of structures from this era. I am an obvious enthusiast in architecture. The accommodations are comfortable, it is a small hostel. What amenities it lacks are at least a block away. The location is excellent, the guest are around the world as with any hostel. It is a wonderful way to get lost for a weekend.

I was one of very few people staying here when I visited Savannah in November. I most certainly agree about the owner being just a little eccentric. Nice but eccentric. There seems to be different prices based on the room he puts you in. The cheapest rate now being $35.00. The hostel or guest quarters is located in the upstairs of this old victorian house built in the late 1800s, while the owner lives on the main floor. The two areas are separate and have two separate doors. For 35.00 he puts you up in a rather pathetic, dingy, little room with a bunk bed just off the balcony that has a door that is broken and won't close. It is held shut by putting a chair in front of it. In summer this might be ok but in winter it was cold at night and just wasn't acceptable. I moved to a large room that had 6 bunkbeds that was the male dorm. The room was empty, so why he didnt put me here in the first place I dont know. He didnt have much too say when he found out I moved on my own. I told him it was too cold in the other room and he said he fixed the door. Yeah, putting 2 chairs infront of it sure is fixing it!!! Glad I only stayed 2 nights. The upstairs is quite large and one room leads into another. The ceilings are very tall and there is a long hallway leading to all these rooms. I saw only 1 bathroom and can imagine this being a hassle if this place gets busy in the warmer months. The place was clean but very plain and could certainly use a good paint job. He was painting his living area but I doubt he would spend the money on the hostel part. Its too bad Savannah doesnt have another and better hostel than this one. This could be a great place if the owner didnt charge so much and put his guests up in a decent room. At night the shutter bangs against the window if it is windy and the floors creak. I agree with the girl who said the place is kind of creapy if you let your imagination get away from you.

I was very hesitant about staying at this hostel based on the other reviews I'd read. But I had a very pleasant experience. The owner was somewhat eccentric but not rude or inhospitable. He gave me a map of the city and showed me which library has free Internet. It's right next to a supermarket. Contrary to other reviews I've read, the beds don't have plastic sheets. Yes, the mattresses are covered in plastic but upon check in you're given a sleep sack (two sheets sewn together) and a clean pillowcase. The bathrooms and kitchen are clean. There are a couple of clotheslines to hang wet towels and such on. The lounge has a very comfortable couch. It is air-conditioned but I think the owner doesn't set the temperature down that low in order to keep costs down. My only wish is that the floors had been swept or vacuumed. They were kind of dusty. I would stay here again, the guests were nice and the location was great.

The lock out time during the day is ridiculous for a hostel. There should be someone staffing it properly to make sure it's available at reasonable times. The husband and wife team was polite and helpful, though my impression is that this "sideline" business is more of a hindrance than a lifelong ambition. The hostel was very dirty and looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a long time (hence the reason for it losing the stars, as I can cope with everything else). The sheets given were clean but very strangely sewn together. Get up early if you wish to use the bathroom. We found cockroaches in the TV room, which made us edgy for most of the night. It gets 2 stars simply for its location.

Despite all the bad publicity I thought this place was the most reasonable in town and the manager was adequately informative and never rude. It was clean and very well positioned. The only complaint I had was the lockout from 10-5, as it was unbearably hot and humid sometimes and it would have been nice to stay in and read or relax, especially during a three-day stay. Overall I still think it is a bargain considering how expensive hotels are in Savannah. Even the ones far out are dear.

Okay place, the owner didn't seem too bad — reading other reviews I thought the guy was gonna be a total jerk. He jacks up the prices for the holiday weekends, like everyone else. He's kind of touchy about alcohol, though. If you want to be sneaky and bring some in anyway, don't get overzealous and wake up his wife or the baby! You'll probably get kicked out. There are only two bathrooms, one male and one female. Wake up early if it's a full house, or you'll be waiting forever to take a shower! Be a sport and leave an artifact for the next traveler in the secret cubby under the floorboard in the common room. : )

As far as the basics go, this hostel isn't any better or worse than most others I've been to. The manager definitely lets you know what an inconvenience you are to him. And the 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. lockout period was an annoyance. Unfortunately, for the location and price you can't really beat it. But believe me, one day in Savannah will more than make up for it.

Savannah is absolutely amazing; it looks like the past. I stayed at the hostel and was delighted to see moss hanging outside my window. The owner was pleasant enough, and gives you a handy map for exploring. The kitchen was rather small but my dorm room was huge. I had a good stay.
