Funky place but not for everyone! This hostel feels more like a big sharehouse, Collingwood is a cool area of Melbourne (lots of cafes & bars nearby). Good facilities -- big kitchen, free internet, but I think the owner needs to be a little more discerning about the "characters" he allows to stay long term at the hostel. The dorm I slept in was overtaken by 2 long-termers who had made the place their own with all their junk, hanging stuff on the beds, so there wasn't room for anyone else to put their stuff. Of course my experience was dependent on the people staying there at the time, but I wasn't into the drug dealing, goon drinking, & heavy smoking inside which all took place while i was there. I'd prefer to chat with nice friendly people about travel at a backpackers, rather than hang out with ferals, which this place seemed to attract! — Anonymous , New Zealand (2010-10-20)

Set in the midst of the coffee and cake fuelled scene that is Collingwood, Collingwood accomodation is typically laid back and easy going. Its staggering distance from the popular and vibrant Brunswick street, with copius bars, live music events and atmosphere galore.
A short tram ride is all it takes before you are in the depths of Melbourne city centre with shops and bars galore. Collingwood accomodation does not cater for the 'mad fer it' backpacker but prefers to detach itself from the lets get pissed and then puke everywhere scene, instead opting for a much more relaxed approach with most of its residents choosing to stay for a couple of weeks/months rather than a couple of nights, altogether making it feel more like a home from home. As such of course it doesn't have the clinical feeling of many of the other backpacker hostels and there are only nine rooms in total. It is well used, so don't come here expecting a palace, it is the environment, the location and the people that sell this hostel not how it looks, don't expect power showers and a bleached kitchen and you won't be disappointed. — Amy , United Kingdom (2007-05-20)

This is an elusive place to find on web sites. I've just stayed there and found it very good. The owner, Paul, is very friendly and helpful and the whole place is very civilized. I'm older than the average backpacker and was looking for a quieter place. It's near some good pubs and dining places, eg. "Aussie Indian", which despite its name has cheap, authentic Indian food. Convenient for public transport too. — Rob (2006-06-23)
