The Hostelz.com Review
Kandersteg International Scout Centre is only a short hop through the town from the train station. On leaving the main exit of the train station, take the road straight in front of you then at the T junction turn right to walk thought the town. Follow this road for about fifteen minutes until you go under the train tunnel, then turn right at the phone boxes and the centre is straight in front of you.

The centre has a friendly atmosphere which is extremely helpful if you are not a scout, as at first you might feel a bit out of place. The reception is quite a busy area but the staff are multilingual and will even give you a tour on the way to your room. Credit cards are accepted but there is a small fee involved and you will also need to leave a small deposit for having a key to your room.

The rooms are very spacious with around nine bunk beds and they come accompanied with a table and chairs. On departure you will have to sweep and mop your own room and it will be inspected by a member of staff before you leave. There is no shortage of showers and toilets per floor and all are of the highest standard. Downstairs there is an activities desk where you can book hikes, guided tours, and bike rides in summer or skies and ice climbing in winter. You can also buy time for the internet from reception for around a euro. Breakfast, lunch, packed lunches, and dinner is also available from the dining room, thought these need to be booked in advance from the reception. These are extremely good value for money.

Overall this centre is primarily a Scout centre, but is a really cheap and great way to see some of the Switzerland mountain scenery if you are a backpacker on a budget. If you eat from the centre and book a hike or skiing from the activities desk, you'll find it is a much cheaper option than anywhere else in town. Whether it's winter or summer you'll find you stay here enjoyable.
