Description
Butharlyp Howe YHA is a beautiful 4 star VisitBritain rated hostel nestled in it's own grounds, 2 minutes walk from the centre of Grasmere village. The village itself is renowned for being William Wordsworth's home for a number of years and his legacy lives on, in and around the old buildings at Town End where Dove Cottage can be found.

The area around Grasmere is an Outdoor enthusiasts playground, with miles of ridges and fell tops to roam on. Walking routes to Helvellyn, the Langdale Pikes, Fairfield and many others start and finish in Grasmere and we are also, a mid-point on the Lake District leg of the Coast to Coast. Not only walks for the stronger but the area has an abundance of scenic walks for all levels of ability. Group Outdoor Activity holidays can be booked in advance

5 Great location for hiking
I stayed at this hostel for four days on the 14th to 18th of October 2009. It was clean, comfortable. I originally was going to stay only 2 days. But all of the other hostels in the Lake District were full. It did not really matter because not only is there endless places to hike within walking distance of the hostel, there is also a bus to Keswick as well. I walked several hours a day for four days and still did not get to see all that i wanted to see. The views are fantastic. But as the walking paths can get stony and marshy, you should bring hiking boots. This hostel does not seem to get as full as others in the Lake District.I do not know why because it is very nice and has just as many beautiful hills to walk up as the other parts of the Lake District. It is also just a few hundred feet from a bus stop that comes from Windemere train station. But is off the main road so it is very quiet at night [the stars are wonderful on a clear night]. This may seem silly, but i also loved the fact that the guy at reception listened to brass band music while he worked. It was a welcome change from all of the bad pop music that you usually hear at hostel reception area. Overall nice staff, great location, and a very nice hostel.
