I was fine with it. i went to jaco for my 35th bday as a gift to myself 5yrs ago. i went alone as i usually do travel. i was there 2weeks and the last 7days i stayed at Nathans. i'm a GlobeTrekker style traveler and had no negative issues what so ever with this hostel. Have i been in more plush hostels ... sure i have, but plush aint my thing ... dig? Also, i didnt feel like i was in "their" living room (which is a comfortable screened porch) ... rather, i felt like i was in my own living room. As long as they had my money for the night, they didnt seem to care what i did, as long as i was respectful of the hostel and the other guests. Nathan even let me stay for free on my last night, as i only had enough money left to get back to San Jose and for the departure tax to return to the states. Yeah there were a few minor condition issues with the a.c. and the small rooms and the dorm beds wouldnt cut it at the Holiday Inn up the street. But Nathans is a great little hostel and i felt right at home. Thanks to Nathan, his son, his dad, and Andre ... and to the cute Tica that kept the place nice & tidy. — Kerk Roberts , usa (2012-02-06) Not great We stayed here for just one night and that was enough. Four of us were put into a cell-like dorm room with no windows and a very loud air conditioning unit. The hostel was clean enough but there was no real atmosphere, maybe as was no-one else staying in the hostel at the time. The guy who was looking after the place, seemed to be in poor health and maybe not physically/mentally up to having guests stay at the time. Although he was generally helpful and friendly he gave us the impression that he distrusted us and was inconvenienced by our presence. He even told us we were ripping him off by only paying $30 for a 3 bed dorm which the four of us were squeezed into, as he had no other beds in the completely empty hostel available at the time. The communal area felt was more like someones living room and the old guy slept there on his rocking chair all night surrounded by his weapons,"cause you never know when the buggers are gonna come for you." The beds in the dorm were arranged head to toe and the sleeping area wasn't all that restful. Two nights in a row a gringo guy brought back his hooker friend and the other guy there was Costa Rican living there full time. The owners are friendly but it felt strange to be in the common room because it felt like you were in their living space and not in a hostel. — Chelsea and Raul (2006-12-02) Nathon's Hostel is basically the best hostel I have ever had the pleasure of staying in during my semester in Costa Rica. Nathon is a kick ass guy who has a great laid back staff with tons of advice and recommendations for things to do around town. Besides the cheap fee, I met some of the nicest people while staying in his hostel. The hostel sucks without the old owner, Chuck. He brought in the best group of people and took care of everyone like family. Family dinners everyone chipped in on and cooked together, live music every night (his guitar playing), surf sessions together. He made people want to stay in Jaco longer. I lived in this bare hostel for two months because Chuck was like an uncle and brought in such a great backpacking crowd. He was fired because the place didn't make enough money since it was low season, and the guy flipped out that his business wasn't making money and blamed it on Chuck who took care of that place for him the whole time he was of messing around, versus blaming himself. I wouldn't recommend the place because it was only great because of the company.
Reply from the Owner: Chuck never owned Nathon's Hostel thus the name. Chuck was fired for stealing money and dealing drugs. He was my friend for 15 years before he let cocain rule his life. I'm Sorry for those who liked him he was my friend too. Nathon's Hostel does not endorse this kind of activity. Since Chuck left we have served over two thousand satisfied customers and have made vast improvements at the same low cost. Private rooms $25 Hostel dorms $10.. We offer A/C, cable, live music, communal kitchen, surf board rentals, free bicycles, laundry facilities and much more. Chuck Stang is a liar and a thief and has been a black mark on my business since I hired him. He is the one who has posted negative remarks about this hostel. Nathon's has been and still is the number one Hostel in Jaco for two years running and will remain the best Hostel experiance for your money.
