The Hostelz.com Review
Kobe Dears Backpacker House is a fine hostel, unfortunately located away from the city center. It has nice, cheery dorms and a cozy lounge and run by a friendly couple.
The Location
A bit of a trek to get to there, and not much of anything to do in the area. It's fifteen minutes' walk from the nearest train station and several stops on the train from the main station in Kobe. The hostel boarders residential and industrial districts, feels safe just nothing much to do there.
Rooms and Bathrooms
This is a small hostel -- only two dorms and a couple private rooms. Each dorm has four beds as well as a locker for each bed but you need your own padlock. The beds are ok (a little hard) and the linen provided is minimal (one sheet on the bed and one blanket). There are two nice, clean showers -- one for men and one for ladies -- that can be used twenty-four/seven.
Common Spaces
They have a decent kitchen, a small lounge with a TV/DVD player with some DVDs and a computer for free use. Wi-Fi is also available for free. Some local travel information is also available. This is a quiet hostel, not really a social place but ok for relaxing and getting a night's sleep.
Summary
The owners are nice, but they aren't there much of the time -- only after 9 a.m. for the morning and then from 3 to 9 p.m. There is no check in after 9 p.m. and the main door is locked after this time but you have twenty-four-hour access via the patio door which is never locked.
Our overall verdict is that the inconvenient location and lack of security with the patio door unlocked all night are cons, but the place is nice with good facilities. If you don't have a problem with the location, then it's a fine place to stay.

Best Hostel so far We're doing a two-week trip of Japan and came to stay one night here in Kobe. The place was great! Very nice, family neighborhood, not difficult to find if you follow the directions. Took us less than ten minutes with luggage to reach it. Place is very clean and open, felt like we were guests at a friend's house not at a hostel. Has free internet, you can use their kitchen to cook, put things in fridge, etc. Bathroom, shower, sink area were all very clean. Slept in the four-girl dorm it was clean, had locker for each person with lock, and it was big enough for all my luggage. The beds are large size and you get a nice thick blanket to use. Everything is made with wood, gives it a nice feel, and it is all very sturdy! The whole place was just very comfortable, the owner and his wife are nice and friendly, and if we hadn't had to take a bus from Nagoya to Tokyo the next day I think we would've stayed longer! — Heather B , USA (2008-03-01)

Clean and tidy, with comfortable facilities incuding excellent kitchen. The proprietor was very helpful by providing lots of info about Kobe. The location was good if you like a quieter area, but still a short commute to the downtown. — steve (2006-10-02)

Really nice place. The lady who runs it is about the nicest lady ever. She puts tons of care into it, and is so kind and accommodating. — joe (2006-08-31)
