Sitka Youth Hostel is nested on top of hill --- less steep than Juneau but still high up. This hostel has an impersonal common area on the ground floor with two couches and some chairs. Meeting chairs around two meeting tables is the dining room and a pretty well-equipped kitchen where everyone has to be careful to use the correct drawers and fridge (part of the kitchen belongs to the next door church).
The hostel offers free coffee and tea in the morning and evening as well as free local phone calls. The overnight is quite pricey for what the place offers. There are gender specific dorms -- twelve army beds for males and four army beds plus two mattresses on the floor for girls. If you don't have a sleeping bag, you will be provided with bed linen, a pillow case, and a thin cotton blanket. There are four showers and four toilets (gender specific as well) -- not the best you may find, but there is hot water for everyone. Ladies bathroom needs some fixing!
This is more a pilgrim's rest for those who do not want to camp in this rainy area.
