Description
Hostelz.com's Review
Arequipay Backpackers Hostel, run by the lovely Evelyn, is an old Colonial home converted into a hostel. The bright red house with an open courtyard provides for a homey atmosphere.

The Location

Just ten minutes' walking distance from the Main Plaza, Arequipay Backpackers Hostel is located in a very cozy and safe neighbourhood of Arequipa. Reaching the airport or bus station is possible by taxi from the hostel for a cost.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The hostel provides an option of private rooms or dorms. The private rooms are located in the first floor. With very basic furnishing of beds and side tables, the rooms are comfortable for backpackers. Do not expect luxury. The dorms are also very basic. There are common bathrooms in the ground floor and first floor of the hostel and they are in a very hygienic condition.

Common Spaces

This hostel is blessed with lovely common spaces, starting from the reception, which also doubles up as a gaming parlour with a Foosball table and some board games. You can always sink into a comfortable couch with a book from the library. The other common room has a TV and a DVD player. There are two computers with free internet in the common room as well. If you are looking for some sunshine and a beautiful view, head to the terrace and lie around in the hammock or the deck chairs. Sunbathing with the view of the El Misti volcano is always an option here.

Backpackers can also use the kitchen and the common dining room. Very basic breakfast is served in the same room, normally with a selection of bread, juice, and coffee.

Plenty of tourist information is available, with printouts of things to do in Arequipa and the nearby areas. The owner has taken a lot of effort to put up information about every destination nearby. Tours can also be arranged to Colca Canyon and El Misti Volcano from this hostel.

Summary

When you need a break from your backpacker lifestyle and you are looking for a homey place to stay for a while, this is your best choice. Arequipay Backpacker Hostel is a good choice for a quaint accommodation in a quaint city.

3   Cool place, but definitely not the best hostel I've ever stayed This hostel was in former times a school or maybe a cot for animals. Its old and not in very good conditions. The patio is nice and big. Coloured in red and with plants. You have a nice view from the roof, where the hammocks are located. There is no oven. You can just find two portable cooking plates, which is not enough for a hostel with thirty or more people. Also three bathrooms are not sufficient for a hostel in this size! The staff are friendly and helpful.  , German ()
4   Great Evelyn, the owner, is amazing -- nothing is too much trouble for her. The other staff are also good (especially Christina) and the breakfasts are delicious -- freshly squeezed orange juice and all. It's a great little place with a lovely courtyard and very friendly and chilled out. My only negatives are that its near the dodgy area of town so not the safest area after town (although its fine if you know where you're going) and the front dorm gets a lot of traffic noise. Otherwise, highly recommended and I¨d definitely stay here again.  , England ()
5   Highly recommended! Arequipay Backpackers is one of the best hostels on our trip (and we travel for nine months). the rooms are clean, the kitchen, and the nice chillout room with DVD and free internet is perfect to hang out. We had a great time at this hostel and Evelyn is really helpful with everything and the free breakfast with fresh orange juice is the highlight! So we really recommend this hostel to have a save and good time in Arequipa. Enjoy!  , Germany ()
5   Very welcoming and helpful staff. Clean and safe. I had a great experience at Arequipay Backpackers. Evelyn is amazingly helpful. The place is kept very clean and is safe. Nice little chill out room as well. DVDs and music. A great place to relax and enjoy the city. Can't recommend it enough.  , USA ()
5   Lovely! This is probably the friendliest hostel i have stayed in since i have been in south america! I arrived after having to walk ten kilometers from the bus due to bus strikes and road blocks, and all i wanted was a friendly face and a hot shower -- and i got both and more! comfy beds, a nice kitchen, free tea and coffee all day, and really helpful tour and bus information! Fantastic!  , England ()
5   Very helpful Nothing is too much trouble. friendly and welcoming. Rooms are basic, but have a bed which is all you need. Good kitchen and selection of DVDs is immense.  , Wales ()
4   Welcoming This is a little gem near the Plaza de Armas. Evylin is warm and welcoming, nothing's too much trouble. The breakfast is good (see homemade strawberry jam, yum!), double bed was very comfy complete with beautiful views. There's also a wide range of cheap trips you can book through here, but for lazy days check out the wicked DVD collection. Definitely a great place to stay.  , Australia ()
5  Very good chilled out place. Owners are very friendly and helpful plus it helps being able to book the bus directly from the hotel/hostel. Stayed in extremely spacious dorm all to myself. Close to the main plaza and within walking distances of most of the main sites. Free coffee all day! highly recommended.  , Scotland ()
