The Hostelz.com Review
If you're staying in Auckland, we highly recommend Verandahs Backpackers Hostel. Get away from the large, crowded, impersonal, and noisy hostels and stay in the wonderful, small and very friendly Verandahs.

Located next to bus stops and within very easy walking distance of downtown's Queenstreet and one minute from "K-road," Verandahs is right off of Ponsonby Road, with restaurants, pubs, shops and much more nearby. Western Park is literally out the back door, and is a great place to wander and relax. If you are arriving from the airport, Super Shuttle takes you to the door. To take Auckland's Link bus, get off at Art Station, walk towards the park and turn right on Hopetoun street just before the park. Verandahs is the third house on the left side of Hopetoun street as you head towards the Sky Tower and downtown.

Verandahs is a small hostel with only eleven rooms, which range from single rooms to doubles, twins, triples, and dorms with up to five (non-bunk) beds. The hostel is a Victorian villa built over a hundred years ago, and every room is clean and cozy with bright walls, large windows, and character. Some rooms have lovely fireplaces too. Beds are comfortable and made up for you with sheets and duvets. There are clean toilets and showers near the rooms.

This hostel is a great place to relax and meet other travelers. The lounge is a popular place to hang out and has a very friendly setting. There isn't a TV, but books, magazines, and music are available, as is computer with internet access, and you'll likely find good conversation and relaxation here. There are two kitchens around the corner, providing plenty of cooking space. The kitchen is stocked with spices and other cooking essentials, and you'll probably find everything you need to cook any meal.

You'll find a nice porch to enjoy the views from out back (check out the Sky Tower at night!), and a large garden below. Other offerings include a phone with free local calls (perfect for calling cards with local access numbers!) and a washing machine and dryer downstairs for a few dollars. If you are arriving on a "quiz night" at the local pub, you'll probably be invited to join in on the fun as a group (and perhaps win a bar tab!).

Verandahs is owned by four brothers who opened this hostel after spending a great deal of time traveling themselves. You'll most likely meet Campbell, who manages the hostel and is very friendly and helpful. He is a great source of knowledge for backpackers and can help you find other hostels around New Zealand and can give you insight on destinations, backpacker buses, and the like.

If you're just arriving in New Zealand and/or Auckland, Verandahs is a great place to come. Get acquainted with the city, meet friendly travelers, and stay in a "home away from home" during your stay. This was our first hostel on a four-month trip, and remains one of the most memorable and favorite places we stayed. You might want to book ahead if you can, as this hostel is quickly becoming a favorite with many other travelers as well! Verandahs Backpackers Hostel is a wonderful, memorable, relaxing and friendly place to stay -- come see for yourself!

This is a great hostel and I highly recommend it. The owner, Campbell, is friendly and helpful and obviously enjoys what he does. The hostel is in a gorgeous building with great views of the city and there are no bunks. The bathrooms are new, spotlessly clean, and large. The two kitchens are small but adequate and there are plans to improve them once the second hostel opens next door. It's a great place to start or end your trip although you do need to book in advance for this hostel. Ponsonby is a great place to stay, much nicer than the city centre and with lots of places to go out as well. It is only a twenty-minute walk to the city centre or there is a bus stop close by.

Justifiably popular. I stayed in a lot of places across New Zealand over three and a half months and this is the only place I have felt compelled to leave feedback about (and I used this site to pick hostels for every stop on a round-the-world trip). Warm, relaxed, quiet but still sociable, good location, and best of all, no huge institution-like dorms like the ones you'll find in other hostels on the Kiwi Experience and Stray trails. Campbell goes all out to make sure his guests receive individual care and attention. I saw him go through the same thoughtful introductions and explanations at least a dozen times a day, and remarkably, his enthusiasm never dimmed. I lost my keys several times and even left my BBH card behind after I checked out, but Campbell was always on top of it. He even had a few of us down to the other building to watch a DVD one night (there's no TV in the hostel, and I think that's always a good thing). The only problem with Verandahs is that it's normally booked-out solid. So if you're planning to stay for a few days, there may be a lot of chopping and changing with regards moving to a different room every day. But I imagine this will be less of a problem when Verandahs 2 opens up next door (was under construction when I stayed there in Dec. '06).

This was an excellent place to start our trip around the north island. Campbell goes out of his way to help you and make your stay enjoyable. Clean and spacious dorm rooms, no bunks! Very homey and in a good location. Had a really good time here.

Excellent hostel. Campbell, the owner, will do anything to help from booking/hiring a car, giving you advice and booking bus tours, dropping you off wherever you need to be, booking hostels. He's done loads of activities in NZ so can give you accurate advice. Warmest owner ever. Showers are clean and powerful, kitchen has the full range of herbs and spices, there are tons of bars and restaurants round the corner. Fab, I'll definitely be going back. It's also very sociable as it's quite a small place.

This is such a nice, clean, and quiet place -- it feels like staying by someone in your own (extended) family. I have never encountered anything like the kindness and hospitality of the people of New Zealand and this place personified my happy experiences there. It is so close to all the fun things to do, and the view is incredible from the porches. I wish I were there right now!
