Hostelz.com's Review
HI - Bangkok - Sukhumvit Hostel is a clean, well located, affordable, budget accommodation, perfect for people looking to spend a few nights in Bangkok.

The Locationb>

The hostel is located a short walk away from the Thong Lo BTS station, and very easy to find. The Suvarnabhumi Airport is easily accessible by BTS and MRT and the Don Mueang Airport is accessible by BTS and then cab. It is not very centrally located or in a popular area, but it is a safe area and it is conveniently located very close to public transportation. It is close to a 7-11 and some restaurants, as well as many street food stalls.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are small and there is no storage inside, so usually there is also a lot of luggage on the floor. The rooms are good for people intending to just use them for sleeping, but are too small to be spending too much time inside. The rooms and beds are kept clean, however, they can get a little messy due to their size. Each bed has a little curtain, which does a very good job of giving guests some privacy.

The bathrooms are very clean and very modern. The showers are also clean, and work very well. The cabins are separate from the toilets, and are spacious enough to allow for your clothing and towel to stay dry. The sinks are also separate from the showers and toilets. There is a hairdryer in each bathroom, as well as a rack of free toiletries that guests have left behind (such as shampoo or sunscreen).

Common Spaces

There is a common area downstairs, as well as a table and a few chairs outside. It is a very comfortable and inviting area, and people use it often. Coffee and tea is free all day, and the Wi-Fi connection is strong. It is a social hostel, but not overwhelmingly so. We usually find HI hostels to be cold and impersonal, but this one has a lot of character and is not too large to make it too hard to socialize.

Summary

The HI Sukhumvit hostel is a good choice for people on a budget wishing to spend a few days in Bangkok. It is clean, friendly, and close to public transportation. It is less convenient for people staying longer, as it is not very close to any of the popular areas, and transportation time and cost will maybe start being a problem after a few days.

5   Lovely refuge from the city The location is perfect -- 1 minute from a BTS skytrain stop. There are restaurants and bars nearby. It's a fancier area of the city, but it's safe and has good walking. There's also a ton of street food that sets up in the evening. If you can find the shaved ice vendor, get some because he's not open all the time! Loved the rooftop patio and the main reception area. Clean bathrooms and hot water. Mini kitchen that's good enough for cooking if you want to.  , age 27, Canada ()
2   Too expensive This place doesn't respect the HI 10% rebate for members. It's probably the most expensive hostel in Bangkok. On the plus side, it's got some of the best street food on its street ...  , Canada ()
5   One of the finest places to stay in real thailand -- bravo mr pitt you want to have the real feeling of thai hospitality -- stay here! the owner and his fine team of helpers will do the best to make you feel welcome twenty-four hours a day. during the last four years I stayed five times and will do so in the future as well. and the location is excellent. the evening food street a gourmets pleasure. internet service of the best. excellent spotless clean rooms and toilets top security for the whole building -- fine small exchange book corner. breakfast is tea or coffee with toast jam or orange marmalade -- yum! international travelers make interesting chats all day long.  , germany ()
5   Enjoy real Thai hospitality and meet people from all over the world A hosteler for many years, I have stayed here six times and highly recommend it for all ages and backgrounds. Friendly hospitality and new friends will stay with you and make your travels delightful. The staff do an excellent job and look for ways to serve you without your having to ask. Unlike many hostels in the world, Sukumvit 38 has an exceptional housekeeping staff that keep the place spotless. They provide a self-service light breakfast. If you want a full breakfast, the market is nearby and you can cook your own food in the well appointed hostel kitchen. That's the most fun. To taste what others are cooking and nibble on all kinds of things which are international treats. These people are all Thais, some with Chinese ancestors, so certainly don't prefer other nationalities. I really hope that you will come visit to see for yourself and enjoy your stay.  , USA ()
5   Nice hostel Very Clean. good location, close to airport, and there is a cool little street market and massage place just around the corner. The staff were very accommodating and at least one person spoke english very well. Not really a party Hostel, not close to clubs, so nice and quiet to sleep. Great place to meet friendly, interesting people from all walks of life. Coffee tea and toast in the morning. separate male and female bathrooms. A really nice rooftop veranda with a beautiful view. Laundry machines, and communal kitchen. I didn't want to leave. My favorite Hostel ever! Should say more that they have to offer because some things weren't listed, no breakfast but they provide tea, coffee, and bread for free, Which I really liked. The Laundry, kitchen, and separate bathrooms. As well as it being quiet to sleep and close to the street market.  , USA ()
2   Not So Great I checked in internet and informed my friends to stay there, however the customer service was really bad. They were discriminative to asian people. Actually, the asian people must clean up their breakfast tools while the europeans didn't. While my friends had the first-time breakfast and they didn't clean it because they had never been informed, the receptionist talked to them in a criticism language. The housemaid was also unfriendly. She got angry to my friends because someone enter the restroom wearing sandal and it made the floor dirty. although my friends explained that it wasn't because of them, the maid still angry and half-shoutly talked to my friends. The bed is very hard and uncomfortable to be used. The breakfast is only bread and tea. It's really out of our imagination. From all of the receptionist, there is only one person that was being nice to my friends and just because of this person, my friends would like to stay in this place. If you are looking for a comfort vacation, I really not recommend you to stay in this place. They should review their quality service in order to compete with other hostels. Hope Hi-Sukhumvit can have a better customer service in the future.  , Japan ()
5   Very comfy a short block walk to Thong Lo Skytrain station which is very handy, the block you walk has food vendors and some places to eat inside off the street, very good food 40 baht. Ate there all month. 100 baht wireless internet even worked on the second floor most times. Dead quiet at night so relaxing on the rooftop garden area is very relaxing though at any time you might find yourself in animated discussion of many things with people from all over the world and all with a lovely view of sleeping Bangkok skyline. stayed a month, March 2007.  , USA ()
4  At HI-Sukhumvit, you can avoid the crowded Khaosan. I felt myself staying in a peaceful and tranquil resort. The staff are very helpful.  ()
