The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Piran - Youth Hostel Alibi B14 has a great location in Piran, a small town. This hostel is on a quiet street and easy to find near the main square and restaurants. The hostel is in an old-style house in Piran and shows its age. The rooms are outdated but typical of old-style homes in Piran. Of the three Alibi hostels in Piran, this one has the newest feel. It has the reception on the fourth floor but is planning on moving the reception across the street to its sister hostel, the Alibi B11, very soon.

The staff are very friendly but disorganized and seemed overwhelmed with taking care of three hostels. Staff members are not always on site. Guests need to call in advance to have someone come to let them into the building. There is no air conditioning or heating available, which might be a problem during the hottest or coldest months. There are art murals on the wall and efforts are made to make it seem fresher and newer than the building seems.

The Location

The hostel is in the center of town near restaurants and bars. It is close to the ocean and boat docks. It is very easy to find and it is across the street from Alibi B11 hostel.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The bedrooms are four-person, en-suite dorms. They are very clean and the bathrooms are spotless. Towels are available for a fee. Sheets are clean and provided for free. There are locks on the rooms doors and on the front door providing good security.

Common Spaces

There is a very big kitchen with stove, refrigerator, sink, oven, and utensils for guest use with a large table for communal cooking and eating. There is also a large main terrace where people can hang out and socialize. There are two free internet terminals, however, they were not working when we were there but are supposed to be ready by high season. Laundry is available for a price and is drop-off rather than self service. There are rules for the building and many signs telling guests to not smoke, conserve water.

Summary

This is the best of the three Alibi hostels for socializing. It has common areas for people to cook and relax. It is only fifty meters from the beach and there is a diving center nearby. Piran is an old town and so are the buildings, but the location is perfect for exploring.

1 We arrived in Piran having booked a 3 night stay in a double room at the Alibi Hostel in Piran: * Their photos are not representative of the room we were sold * The room was damp and absolutely foul-smelling. There was an overpowering smell of mould. There was little ventilation. It was tiny and squalid * There was black mould growing up several walls * The ‘double' bed was tiny * The reception insisted on payment up-front in cash. There were no receipts * When we confronted the owner next morning, he became rude, aggressive, insisted we were ‘not in a position to make demands' and said we must have some kind of ‘personal problem' * Despite this appalling experience, we were only refunded ONE night from a three night stay The detail: Our room was in a different building, so we did not inspect before paying. BIG MISTAKE The air was very damp - no-one could sleep here, and the room was definitely not worth the €60 charge. Unfortunately we had already paid. We went back to the reception to ask for another room. We could be moved for our final 2 nights (not guaranteed) but we'd have to stay in the room for that night. We were told to come back the next morning. We found a hotel room instead. The next morning we returned. The owner was asleep in a room next to the reception. This was when things started getting nasty. We were refused a refund or the possibility of cancelling. We were told to come back again. By now we were certain that we couldn't stay there after being treated in such a way, even if they found us another room - still in doubt.

1 we didn't get the room we had booked (a double room with a big bed), but a dormitory in another house. a family in the neighbouring room had problems with bedbugs.
