The Hostelz.com Review
Kilfenora Hostel is a basic place to stay conveniently located near The Burren Center. The manager, Orla, is very friendly, down to earth, and helpful and makes you feel welcome and will help with anything you need. The hostel caters to tourists, backpackers, families, and groups visiting this small, traditional Irish community. Kilfenora Hostel prides itself on its green policy. Check-in is efficient and staff seems available. If Orla (or a staff member) is not at the front desk, there is a sign posted telling you to ask over at the pub and they will contact someone. There is no curfew.
The Location
The hostel is located right on the road to The Burren Center, easy to find with free parking in the back of the hostel. It is a good idea to have a car in this area for exploring the Burren. Right next door to the hostel is Vaughan's Pub which offers good hearty pub food, traditional Irish music on weekends, and Set-Dancing every Thursday and Sunday nights. There are a couple other pubs in town, and a few small convenience stores, all within walking distance. Kilfenora is really a small place with one main street -- as far as attractions, it is mostly about the Burren, but the Cliffs of Moher are not that far away. There is Buseireann service into Kilfenora via Ennis. From Shannon, Limerick, Cork, Galway, take Bus 51 to Ennis then bus 333 to Kilfenora.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are basic, with adequate clean bedding, linens, and comforters. There are lockers and recycling bins and ample electric outlets. The rooms could use some hooks for hanging things up. Even though the hostel is next to the pub, the rooms are quiet and provide a good night's sleep. There are en-suite dorm rooms with four, six, or ten beds -- the four-bed rooms are also sometimes rented as privates or family rooms. Bathrooms are basic and clean with hot water. The water pressure is excellent. Room rates include free continental breakfast of toast, cereal, coffee, and tea.
Common Spaces
The common areas are comfortable and well equipped, making for a good social environment. Free Wi-Fi is available in common areas and accessible from at least some of the rooms. There are also a couple computers available in the living room, with internet access available for a charge. There is a large self-catering kitchen stocked with toaster, coffee pot, pots, pans, dishes and cutlery, fridge, microwave, and stove top. The free continental breakfast is set up on a counter in the kitchen. There is an adjoining dining area with large windows. From the kitchen you can also access a lawn area and BBQ facilities.
The living room has sofa and chairs, a TV, and DVD player. There is a selection of DVDs and books available for guests. There is a launderette with washing and drying machines.
Summary
Overall, this is a good place to stay while visiting The Burren. The welcoming and helpful hostess provides quiet clean lodging with the convenience of a good pub next door. It is suitable for families, couples, solo travelers, or groups, with a relaxed feel in a small community.
