MEININGER Cologne City Center has a great location and staff!

The Location

The Cologne Meininger is located just a short walk away from Rudolfplatz. You will find some cool bars around here, a few different shops, and it is very close to the start of the free walking tour. It is a bit of a walk from the Central train station and the Dom, but the public transport lines to get around the city if you're not keen on walking is also very close by making it easy to get around. It is also cheap and easy to get to and from the airport.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms here are quite spacious and the beds are very comfortable. You make your bed yourself here and it is first come first serve on who gets what bed. The bathrooms are a little small but for the most part clean. The one in this room smells a little and at times it is hard to get into the bathroom in the morning because there are eight people trying to use it at once, but there are toilets that can be used in the common area if you are desperate.

Common Spaces

There are two main common spaces here. There is a common area with lounge chairs and a bar in the front room just off of the reception where people can meet and hang out but it is usually not full. There are more people here in the early evenings but at the same time you are more likely to meet people in your dorm room.

There is also a small kitchen down in the basement area. You will find a refrigerator and all of your basic cooking needs here, which will be important if you are staying over the weekend. An important thing to note is that all major supermarkets and food stores are closed on Sunday, so if you're on a budget you will need to get food on Saturday. The kitchen also contains laundry facilities that you can use at a cost.

Summary

Overall, this is a great hostel to stay. While it doesn't have the most social of atmospheres, you will find that it has everything you need to make your stay in Cologne a comfortable one.

Fantastically friendly and welcoming staff
We had such a warm and friendly welcome. Nothing seemed a problem for the reception staff. They looked after us in every way they could. This is a team of people to be proud of. We were treated like valuable guests. Thank you so much everyone for making our 1 night in Cologne as special. We'll be back.

Difficult to find, school groups stay here, but also some good points.
I found this hostel hard to find. They should put more explicit instructions and a better map on their website. Also, there are some street names in that area that are similarly spelled, which also further confused me. (Example -- Schaafenstr. and Schaevenstr., and Hohenstaufenstr. and Hahenstr.) When I finally found the hostel, I discovered there were two school groups there. The stairs are in the middle of the building, so every room can hear the kids screaming and running up and down. Aside from these issues, the rooms were very clean, the staff very friendly, and the location was great once I finally oriented myself.

Good hostel, awesome location!
I liked this hostel, the front staff were so friendly and fun. Very helpful. The bar/sitting lounge area was very cool, but during the day/early evening, the front desk person had to run back and forth serving drinks and dealing with arriving clients. It kind of dampened the fun in drinking there. But the location was so excellent, university bars down the street, and the tram stop was around the corner. I would definitely stay here again, the hostel was very clean and nice.

Meininger City Hostel Cologne is both a hotel and hostel, and it has the best of both worlds. It's very modern with bright, bold colors everywhere. Key cards provide entrance to the main door and the rooms, so it definitely feels safe. This is not the kind of hostel that feels like you're staying in someone's apartment, but it's not impersonal either. It has a very nice dining room for the free buffet breakfast, which includes a range of cold-cuts, cheese, fruit juices, bread, coffee, and cereal. The Location Finding this hostel can prove challenging, especially at night. Because it is relatively new hostel, few taxi drivers seem to know of it, or the street that it is on, so come prepared with good directions. It is on a quiet street, which is great for those times when you actually want to sleep! Getting there from the train station involves riding the underground, taking a tram, then walking a couple blocks from the tram stop, but it's actually very quick and relatively easy if you know where you are going. The neighborhood is very young and hip, with numerous bars and all types of restaurants and abundant nightlife. It's definitely the best area in Cologne for active nights, and the area around the hostel feels safe, though a bit quiet and dark. It is a pleasant twenty-minute walk into the old town area and the shopping district -- this provides a great opportunity to see more of the city, though you can take a quick tram ride instead. Rooms and Bathrooms The rooms are spotless, with maid cleaning service daily. The rooms are not the most spacious, but the incredibly comfortable beds with soft down covers totally made up for the small size of the rooms. The rooms are more like a hotel than a hostel, with very nice, new Ikea furniture -- chairs, lamps, and bedside tables, and even TVs and city guidebooks in the rooms for the guests. There are no lockers in the rooms, but the key card system for getting into the rooms provides some peace of mind as far as security. Every room has a private bathroom of a decent size, and they even provide free soap that works brilliantly for hair and body (definitely a plus)! Many of the rooms also have great color accents and cool artwork, with huge windows looking out over a pleasant, quiet street. Common Spaces The M Bar is the main space for meeting other travelers. It's not a crazy party place, but it is busy at night with backpackers, has moderately priced beer, and it's a great place to meet up with a group before heading out to the other bars in Cologne. The common room has a TV, stereo, foosball table, and video games. The internet here is way overpriced, and it's easy to find cheaper internet cafe's throughout the city. Summary This is a really nice hostel, clean and friendly, with a good included breakfast, and a convenient location.

After staying at the Berlin Meininger Strasse branch, I was rather disappointed with this. I'm not sure where those pictures are from, but the dorms look nothing like that! They are so incredibly squashy, it is an obstacle course to get to your bed, and that's when there aren't any bags on the floor! But the dorms are clean with a TV and bathroom (toilet and a shower in a bath that was ok, not too grotty). Other than that, everything else is standard as per the other Meininger Hostels -- good buffet breakfast, one key per dorm. Internet here is incredibly expensive. Also stayed in a single room, that was really nice -- they gave us the single with the biggest bed so we could fit two people in there (they stuffed up our reservation in the dorms). The single room shower gets water all over the floor! Excellent location. Very secure. Lacking in the atmosphere that the Berlin hostel had.
