El Cafecito

Hostelz.com's Review

El Cafecito is conveniently located near the central area of Cuenca. It´s a nice enough hostel with comfortable rooms and a charming cafe. However it seems like the cafe is the main focus, leaving the hostel side a bit neglected.

The Location

El Cafecito is a five-minute walk from the Parque Calderon, Cuenca´s Central Park. It is very convenient and close to all the sites, restaurants, and bars in the city as well as only two blocks from the river. From the bus terminal it is easiest to catch a taxi although there are local buses that can take you to the centre of town. There is a Supermaxi supermarket about a twenty-minute walk from the hostel across the river and a number of smaller shops in the area.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The rooms are very comfortable, clean, and a nice size -- both the dormitory and the private rooms. There are nice touches like hooks, shelves, and reading lights and although some of them are dark they are spacious. The only problem is that they are loud with the music from the cafe, you can also hear the next door night club from some of them so ask! There are only two bathrooms and two showers besides the rooms with private bathrooms. It doesn´t seem like enough for all the rooms but we never had a problem and they are clean. With practice you can get the showers at both a good pressure and temperature which is a great change.

Common Spaces

The only common space available for guests is the cafe as well, and although the cafe is nice it would be better to have another comfortable area as well. The cafe has a fun atmosphere with music playing and is often busy. The food looks good but it is relatively expensive (as most food in Cuenca is). There is no kitchen access for the guests and no computer area either (although down the road is a cheap internet cafe).

Overall it´s a good choice for a place to stay with comfortable rooms -- the only downside is the noise. The cafe has a good atmosphere, but the hostel is lacking some facilities that would make it a lot better.

Nice hostel with friendly staff and great food.
El cafecito is a hip, comfortable hostel in Cuenca. It has a great little cafe, right in the center courtyard, with delicious vegetarian food which is well-priced, and you'll feel right in the center of things there. The vibe is very hip...all young and oh-so-cool, but it's pleasant and not intimidating. We sat at a table playing cards for hours one evening and no-one bothered us to buy more. The te helado is *Excellent*, as are the pancakes...I've never had better. The rooms are smallish, but comfortable. I think the rooms on the courtyard would be a little noisy with the cafe right there, but they close early enough (usually by 10-11 pm when I was there). The building is a lovely 150-year-old house, again with a central enclosed courtyard. There is a garden out back and there are rooms off that area as well, which is where my room was. The showers and bathrooms were clean, but the showers do close during the day, and you must put a deposit down to use a towel (refundable). The toilets are tiny. They do allow free luggage storage if you aren't leaving until late. It was clean, comfortable, affordable (at present, $10pp) and there's some nice art on the walls. It's located 3 blocks from the Parque Calderon (convienent and wasy to get to) on Honorato Vasquez 7-36...best to get a map and walk there.
