The Hostelz.com Review
When you arrive at Crash Palace, the staff have a list of free things to do in Rotorua, which is great to get your hands on. There is heaps of local information in the hostel and they can book activities for you. To keep you entertained in the hostel there is a TV room, pool table, two kitchens, BBQ and outdoor eating area, and a hot tub. There are private rooms, small and large dorms -- all with heating and shared bathrooms. Linen and towels are included.
This hostel is in a fairly old building that seems to be an old mansion and it has a homey atmosphere. The facilities are not as old as the building, yet some things -- like the internet connection and some of the kitchen and bathroom facilities -- are in need of attention. They did seem to be in the process of updating the beds, so maybe the rest of the facilities are on the maintenance "to do" list.
Crash Palace is well located -- from the bus station, the hostel is a short, easy walk. Come out of the bus station and turn right and walk down Fenton Street about three blocks until you see "Jade Factory" on the corner. Turn left here and the hostel is on your left on the first corner.

Great place to relax with amazingly friendly and helpful staff. A young couple bought this hostel in Oktober 2008. They improved everything. New paint, new carpets, new furniture, new kitchen stuff, new pool table fleece, and more and more. The rooms have nice paintings made by the owner, they have all kind of rooms. The whole hostel gets cleaned every single day. They have two well equipped kitchens and a little shop to buy what you need. They have alcohol to sell and some snacks as well. Chris and Toni will help you with every question. They have a free spa, twenty-four-hour internet access, a nice garden area, a comfy lounge, and getting better every day. I really enjoyed it. It used to be very rundown before they Chris started working here, now is a very very lovely place to stay. — Bianca , german (2008-10-30)
Well, well, well, nothing as advertised. the kitchens are of such a poor standard, the pots, pans, crockery, cutlery are ready for the dirt bin. The stove is falling apart, the oven door does not close, and oh my it really needs to be put on the side of the road. The blankets in the rooms need a good wash, the sheets feel stale and not crisp and clean. It was so disappointing as we had visitors from overseas and had to just use Crash Palace to sleep and we had to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the road. It was my worst experience ever. I will for sure not recommend this hostel to anybody. — MARION CHRISTIANS , NEW ZEALAND (2007-04-17)
