The Hostelz.com Review
The Grapevine Seafront is superbly located in the centre of Brighton and at the seafront, just a few steps away from the famous Brighton Pier. You can stay for just the night, or take advantage of their great deals and rent a bed by the week. There's no curfew, free Wi-Fi in their pub, and blankets are provided.
The Location
The Grapevine Seafront is located on Middle Street, a small street off the seafront and only a ten-minute walk from Brighton's train station. The location is perfect for any attractions in Brighton you may wish to visit. There's many restaurants, pubs, clubs, and off-license stores around, and everything in the city is within walking distance.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The hostel holds a variety of rooms, ranging from private rooms over two-bedroom dorms to dormitories. What makes it stand out from other hostels in Brighton, is that they offer beds in three-bed dormitories for the price you would usually pay for a bed in a ten-bed dormitory. On top of that, most beds are proper single beds and not bunk beds. The rooms are very well maintained and clean. There are hooks to hang your coats and clothes on, and the rooms at the seafront have a stunning view. The rooms don't have lockers.
The private rooms and small dormitories are all ensuite. The bathrooms are spacious and clean. For the other rooms, facilities are shared. On the seafront, the rooms are above a restaurant. And because you will hear their soft tunes playing until late in the evening, guests get a discount when eating there.
Common Spaces
The common spaces are located on Middle Street, where the reception is. In the basement, there's a kitchen with a sitting area and TV. The kitchen is spacious and equipped, but there's hardly enough utensils to make a meal with. It's also not particularly the cleanest kitchen we've come across, and to operate the gas cookers, you should bring your own lighter. However, the kitchen does have lockers to store your food and utensils in -- very useful if you plan on staying a bit longer. The sitting area is good for eating your meals and watching some TV. There's also a bookshelf with books, if you happen to just have finished yours. Because the common areas are situated in the basement, there's no natural light.
If you are staying in one of the seafront rooms, you will have to walk just around the corner to get there. It's very close, but it can be annoying if you just wish to make a cup of tea. The common areas close around 10 p.m.
Summary
The rooms are definitely nicer than the average hostel rooms. The kitchen however, is rather poorly equipped. When you're staying at the seafront, you feel more like being in a hotel than at a hostel. It's ideal if you want to get away from the mad crowd for a bit. If you like to party, meet people in the pub downstairs and head off into town!
