The Location
Following the directions to Split Hostel Booze & Snooze may seem like working out a puzzle for the first-time visitor to Split, especially through the maze of cobbled stone streets within the Diocletian Palace. Pushing passed the crowds and busy cafes, the hostel is located in a little alley way behind a Tisak newspaper stand in Narodni Trg. Bear in mind that you may be accosted by some locals asking if you are looking for a sobe (room).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The mixed dorm rooms with en-suites are compact and cheerful, making it more of a social space than sleep zones. All rooms have air-conditioning and heating. There are no private rooms. The floral fragrance of fresh linens and duvets are a nice touch. The pillows and mattresses comfortable and well-maintained. Each guest receives a key for a locker and a room key. Towels are available to hire. Bathrooms are small and cleaned on a regular basis, but there is a lack of hooks/shelves to keep your stuff dry. Hot water is available and the water pressure is adequate. It takes a while for the hot water tank to reheat, especially if you take your shower after those who are addicted to taking long showers.
Common Spaces
During the off-season, there is a common room with makeshift couches, television, a DVD player with a selection of movie titles, and a microwave oven. When summer arrives, the common room is converted into a spare dormitory. Free internet access is available at reception. Wi-Fi access is in all rooms and fairly standard. While there is no kitchen, there is a quiet terrace with lots of room for leisurely drinks and the English-speaking staff will point you in the right direction for cheap food and nightlife. The vibe is social and relaxing.
Summary
Split Hostel is a sweet little space to "snooze and booze" with like-minded travelers within a safe environment. The Australian staff are well-traveled and are a powerhouse of information on Split and Croatia. The girls would be more than happy to help you with planning your itinerary in Split with recommended tours, bars, clubs, restaurants, and sightseeing. It's a fun introduction to Croatia's Dalmatian coast.
