Positives — I did not get lice and I felt ok walking alone to the subway station at night. Also, the residents are really nice. Negatives — I've stayed in some dumps, but this place was the dumpiest of them all. The toilets clogged daily. The water was turned off for about six hours one day, with no prior notice. Doorknobs fell off bathroom doors. Screws are used to turn taps on/off. Roof leaked in the main hallway. The carpet in our room was disgusting. We had an en suite shower/toilet/sink that was constantly being unclogged, repaired, etc. And Lou Barretta (the operator) is argumentative and "disappears" when he should be taking care of maintenance.

I think I stayed there in 2002??? Is it the hostel with all the Czechs??? If it was, it was quite okay. It was my last hostel before travelling home to Denmark. Not too safe in the streets, though. But go for it, it's hard to get a bed in New York, and this is probably one of the cheapest places.

If you are looking for a place to stay for cheap this is it! When you go to New York City you figure you will be out most of the time anyway, so why spend extra money for a room with a hot tub you are never going to use? I stayed here during Christmas break and it was good enough for me. Take the subway ($2) to Times Square or walk if you want. The surrounding area is safe enough to walk alone, but I would walk with a buddy just to be safe. Enjoy!

I stayed in this hostel last year. I thought the location was great during the fall season. It was near the water, close to Greenwich Village and a good walk to Central Park. This place has the basics and if that's all you need, it does the job.

I stayed in this hostel in 2000, and I would not go back. There were cockroaches in this hostel! The walk from the subway was through several darkly lit streets, and had I not always been with a group of friends, I would not feel safe. However the staff were friendly enough.
