The Hostelz.com Review
HI - YHA Borth Hostel is a small and modest hostel situated in the small town by the same name, and is located directly across the road from the stony beach overlooking Cardigan Bay. Here you'll find a kind and welcoming staff, an included full Welsh breakfast, and good night's rest at an affordable price.

The Location

Borth is a quiet seaside town, just a short drive north of the college town of Aberystwyth. The hostel is situated on the main road of Borth just past a short residential lined street. The stony beach across the road is pleasant as are its sandy shores. The water can be rough and cold, but many beachgoers are not deterred. Seaside weather is mixed -- one day may be warm, clear, and sunny and the next may be cold, foggy, and gray. There isn't much to do here so bring your own entertainment). There is a small area for parking in the rear, but plenty of free parking along the beach. Bringing your own supplies is a good idea as most nearby shops have limited supplies.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Dorm rooms are single-sex and cozy, in a Edwardian sea-bungalow kind of way. They have great views of the beach and coastline. Standard lock and key are provided though rooms lack lockers. Luggage storage is available. Dorm rooms also have in-room sinks, while showers are shared. The showers are modern and spacious with good pressure and hot water, and bathrooms are bright and clean adding to the value of this hostel. Rooms are not wheelchair accessible, and climbing stairs is a must.

Common Spaces

The self-service kitchen is merely functional at best. Cookware is horrible, while diningware is adequate. There are a couple of stove tops and good refrigerator space, but the kitchen itself is small with inadequate food preparation or washing up space. The lounge is also small but cozy and more of a reading room than television room, whereas the dining area is spacious and airy with a view of the main road. The best place to meet fellow travelers is everywhere since the hostel is of modest size. Breakfast however provides the best opportunities as the full Welsh breakfast is excellent, complimented by the friendly cook. The games room on the other hand is small and rather cramped. There is no internet access.

Summary

This is a fine budget accommodation situated just a stone's throw north of Aberystwyth along the Western Welsh coast. The reality is that the people make the place, but having a comfortable nights sleep and an excellent breakfast doesn't hurt, and Borth YHA meets both of those requirements with exceptional staff that are helpful and kind.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
4  Morlais - the name of the Edwardian House that is now Borth YHA - translates as "the voice of the sea", and it's no wonder when you consider the setting: The beach is only yards away (across the road, but it's not very busy) from the 4 mile long beach of Borth. The village has not much too offer along the lines of things to do, there is a village shop geared up to seaside holidaymakers but also has the essentials for hostellers (ready meals etc.). It's a great place to stopover on your way from north to south Wales as there is a railway station within easy walking distance from which you can hop on to the train to Cardigan. The hostel is functional more than cosy, the kitchen is rather on the small side but you can eat your meals in the adjoining dining room. There is also a reasonably priced on-site restaurant. The rooms are good sized and have glorious views out to sea - when the windows are open you can hear the waves breaking. Family rooms are available, but no doubles. Bathrooms are OK. The staff were very friendly when we stayed there - no complaints whatsoever. Don't miss an early morning walk along the gorgeous beach - it's worth getting up in time! The house on the left hand corner of picture one is the hostel (seen from the beach), the second photo shows the view from one of the dorms.  , Austria ()
