The Hostelz.com Review
Villekulla Easy Living Lodge is owned and operated by a friendly Dutch couple, who are very helpful in providing information about the area and its attractions. It is clean and attractive, with pleasant scenic views and has a friendly, social atmosphere but is nevertheless reasonably quiet. It attracts many surfers but appeals to all interests and age groups.
The Location
Villekulla Easy Living Lodge is approximately five kilometers to the east of the seaside village of Kommetjie, popular with surfers, and to the west of Fishhoek on the other side on the Cape peninsula. It is located on the south side of the busy Highway M65, at 19 Kommetjie Main Road. Travelers with their own vehicles need to look out for a gate with two flags, one South African and one Dutch, then drive through the gate up a long, rough, gently sloping gravel driveway. There is ample parking on the property, and the gate is locked at night.
Reaching the Cape Peninsula’s many attractions without a car would be a problem, as train and bus stations are some way away, but with one’s own transportation it is simple -- Central Cape Town is a straightforward commute, and Cape Town International Airport can be reached in approximately forty minutes. There are several large supermarkets in Fishhoek. As the property is at a slightly higher elevation than the highway, there is a commanding view north from a deck where there are also tables and chairs, and on a reasonably clear day the scenic Chapman’s Peak is a prominent feature.
Rooms and Bathrooms
There is one multi-bed dorm, which travelers share with locally employed workers who rise early, so this may not suit everyone. This usually locked only when the occupants have gone out for the day, and there are no lockers, although management will store valuables. In addition there are more luxurious double and triple rooms, some of which have their own bathrooms. Otherwise there is an adequate number of shared bathrooms and showers, which are also used by a limited number of tent campers. The showers all have adequate space for hanging clothes and towels and placing soap and shampoo.
Common Spaces
There is a well-stocked bar, which is also the reception area, and a large lounge with sofas, one pay-as-you-go internet computer, book exchange, and a dining area, where guests can consume drinks from the bar and prepared meals or food which they have cooked by themselves. Otherwise they can use the scenic deck, provided it is not raining, or sit by the swimming pool. The backpackers’ kitchen is reasonably well equipped with utensils and contains a refrigerator and limited seating and table space. However, there are only two gas rings a microwave and an electric kettle, so there is a possibility of congestion in the kitchen from time to time. For this reason, management like to limit the numbers of self-catering guests, so it would be a good idea to check beforehand that there is space available.
Summary
This hostel is a good choice for visitors to the Cape Town and Cape Peninsula with their own transportation who prefer to stay outside Cape Town city and is recommended.
