Worst hostel in my 3 month trip Apparently this hostel has nothing to do with what it was in 2007. It is without a doubt the most expensive and crappy hostel my girlfriend and I had to stay in. Unfortunately, we arrived in San José at night time and walking around in the dark with our backpacks was not the best of ideas. we ended up paying way too much for a place that was ... lets just say unpleasant. The beds don't even have real mattresses, the sheets were disgusting (came with stains and everything), they improvised toilets so you might end up sitting with your knees outside the door since there is not enough space in the stall and do not be fooled, although they supposedly charge $14 dollars pp for that crap, if you pay in colones you end up paying $16. plus if you intend to go explore the city and leave your luggage they charge $1 per hour per bag!!! talk about a capitalist owner. when you mention any of this to the person at the reception, you get an answer such as "eso es lo que hay" (that's what there is) before he turns to keep on watching his tv show. — marcel fleissner , germany (2010-05-02)

Clean, tidy, and friendly Most importantly clean, tidy, and friendly. Also inexpensive and a convenient location when you get off the bus from the airport. They do have a computer with internet although the wifi option was hit and miss at that time. There is the promise that will improve as the Costa Rican telecoms system lurches towards privatization. — Peter , UK (2010-01-07)
The worst place ever! Dirty rooms, cold and dirty showers, need to pay for bags storage. The most important -- the manager is rude and unfriendly. Avoid this place. — Gabi , Israel (2009-04-11)
Very bad impression about the receptionist Not to recommended to the Backpackers. — tony , usa (2008-12-18)

Fantastic JC and Friends hostel was my first, and remains as the best, hostel experience I have ever had. The staff and owner, J.C., were helpful and knowledgeable. The hostel was clean and the room was comfortable. We felt very safe being in downtown San Jose and the inside of the hostel has a pool table and a living room with a TV as well as free internet! Breakfast was included and it was overall a great experience. J.C. also helped us get a bus to Tamarindo and book at the other hostel located there. We were lucky to come across this hostel and I will continue to come to this hostel upon returning! — Britta , USA (2007-08-01)
