The Location
The C & N Backpacker Hostel in Port Hardy is located at 8740 Main Street. It is centrally located, just minutes away from the bus station and the tourist information office. There is a local shuttle company that can pick you up at the door of the hostel in order to get to and from the Ferry Terminal which is located on the outskirts of Port Hardy. The hostel offers ample free parking spaces for those of you traveling with a vehicle.
Rooms and Bathrooms
Dormitory accommodation and private rooms are available with linen provided. The single-sex dorms are spacious. There are no lockers offered and the dorm rooms are kept unlocked. The floor in all main areas as well as sleeping areas is made of cement and is very cold and damp. Therefore you may want to bring a pair of slippers because outdoor footwear needs to be left at the entrance of the hostel. The shared bathrooms are spacious, modern, and kept relatively clean.
Common Spaces
The hostel has a large kitchen with all the usual needed facilities. There are a couple of tables available for dining in the kitchen as well as on the back step. There is a small lounge area with a TV and sofas, however the owner tends to use this area as his own private lounge, leaving nowhere for guests to socialise. There are also a few board games available for guests to play.
Summary
The C & N Backpacker hostel is conveniently located in central Port Hardy. But the place does not have much character -- it was once a cinema and not much effort has been put into its conversion into a hostel. The hostel environment is not very friendly (during our stay the owner consumed alcohol while working and also listened to loud music in the lounge area, which discouraged guests from socialising). Overall C & N provides a roof over your head but you may want to go elsewhere if you area searching for a cozy, friendly hostel.
