The Hostelz.com Review
York Backpackers is a friendly and attractive hostel near the edge of a fascinating city. It's a little hard to spot - look up for the sign, and it's across the street from Holy Trinity Church. Though there are no locks on room doors, and no lockers anywhere, access to the hostel is via guest pass only, and the door is guarded closely (after 10 pm you must wait for the night watchman to unlock the door). If you arrive early or depart late you can leave your bags in the unlocked laundry room for free, but at least there is a safe at reception for valuables.

There are three floors of co-ed rooms (some dorms with up to 18 beds!), all named after York attractions and with high, decorated ceilings, big windows and plenty of space. While the beds are warm and clean, make sure you get one with a new mattress or you will feel every spring all night long. There is no lift access, and showers and toilets are only available on the second floor, which leads to crowding. The bathrooms are frequently cleaned, as is the rest of the hostel.

On the ground floor is reception, with lots of brochures and very helpful staff. Internet in the hostel is expensive, but staff can direct you to cheap cafes. There is a small but clean kitchen with many appliances, and the breakfast room, which serves a decent meal every day, is also here.

Downstairs there's a laundry room, a TV lounge, and Dungeons Bar (open 10pm-1am). The TV room is non-smoking, and, though quite small, is the only lounge. People gather here to eat and socialize, and solo travelers will have no trouble finding good conversation. The guests-only smoky bar varies in popularity nightly, and offers many cheap drinks. Guests include a core of long-term residents, groups, and travelers from all over the world. With large dorms and only one common area, it is easy to meet people. Most guests are travelers exploring the UK, and the overall atmosphere of the hostel is welcoming and inclusive.

Unforgettable experience
It was ok for the price I suppose, but there's one thing I'd like to highlight -- the smell in the room where I was with other seventeen people was not something the hostel must be proud of. The staff was ok, sleepy though. If you go with friends and want to have fun, then try it! You'll never forget it!

All round average
Very Average all round, not too much to complain about but not much to rave about either. Was on the pricey side at £14.60 (I guess this could just be English prices) for a room with over twenty beds and the free breakfast is pretty much a joke. It is, however in a great location and has pretty good cooking facilities.

I wasn't expecting miracles, but this was a surprisingly good hostel. It the closest I have been to a proper backpacker hostel in the last couple of weeks traveling. It had a wide range of people staying and it wasn't overrun by long term migrant workers, a problem that has plagued backpacker hostels recently in this country. The staff were very friendly and the place was pretty clean. It's not a party hostel and the corridors can seem a bit empty but there is usually always someone to chat to especially in the kitchen. There is a lot of information about York in the hostel too. The beds are not as bad as some have said and the rooms were fairly well spaced. My only minor gripes were that the showers were a bit cold and I think a key entry or swipe card system would have been better for entry to the hostel than having to knock on the door all the time. But overall I enjoyed my stay at York backpackers and York is a beautiful city too!

We stayed here in October, in a female dorm room. There were no locks on the doors, but I put some stuff in the safe, and was impressed with the way they handled it (took my name, made me sign when it was returned to me, gave me a card with a number, much better than some other hostels). Rooms were clean, as was the kitchen, the toilets and the showers. Showers were ok, although the water pressure wasn't the best in the world. Sheets were clean, although extremely hard to sleep in. Location was good, close walk into the main center of town. Overall, good hostel, worth the money. As a side note, I recommend the ghost tour that leaves from the Minster, was only £2 (student), very interesting and enjoyable.

The location and staff are spot-on at this hostel! In fact, these were the two things that kept me there past the first night. The bathrooms are not clean and the showers provide little more than a warm trickle. I've stayed in other hostels that also do not have locks on the bedroom doors and all of them have felt much more secure than this one. There are no keys to the front doors and after the office closes, any person who rings the doorbell is let into the building. There is a club next door that pumps music into the hostel until 2 in the morning. With a few days' experience there, I'm fairly certain that the sheets are not changed between guests. But, like I said, the friendliness and quality of staff and location did make up for these downfalls.

This is not a great place to stay. It has terrible beds — they're full of springs and not much else. The first room I stayed in, a girl had a bed with bedbugs. In the second room I had a sheet that had been a double bed sheet but had been ripped in to two. The place was generally dirty and bathrooms were fairly icky. was a tiny, cold and crammed common room, and lots of stairs. There were no locks on the rooms. Only stay here if you are desperate.

I spent one night here and believe me one night was enough. Check in was efficient and the reception staff was friendly. The location is central and within easy reach of the town. There is no curfew and you can have 24-hour access. And the room is cheap — £20 per night plus a £20 deposit. However, those are all the good points about this hostel. Here are the bad points: The sheets were stained and didn't look like they had been changed from the previous occupant, or the ones before them, for that matter. The rooms have no locks on them — people kept constantly walking in on us, saying "Oops, wrong room." There is absolutely no privacy, and during the night we had up to six different drunken blokes barge into our room. (There were five girls staying in the room.) The noise went on for most of the night: screaming, shouting, doors banging, giggling, fighting, etc. This is because of the people stopping in at this hostel at the time, and no doubt it isn't like this all the time, but that was no consolation to us. It was a frightening experience and not one I would ever repeat. We never used the showers because we felt too nervous about one of the blokes barging into them, and also there are only curtains across the showers. They are not very clean, either. The breakfast room was quite dirty and not very hygienic. The orange juice tasted like nothing remotely like an orange, and the toast took nearly 8 minutes!!! This place is all right if you are desperate for a cheap place to stay and you don't mind sharing with strangers, or mind strangers walking around your room. But if you can afford an extra £10 go somewhere else.

Yuck — I hated this place. The staff were nice, although one got annoyed with me because I kept asking a lot of questions (I admit it, I did, I had problems figuring out how to use the washing machine). The building itself, though gorgeous from the outside, was musty smelling, and just didn't feel good to me, although I know that's such a subjective thing. Not to mention that there was a South African choir group staying there while I was there (think 9-12 year olds) and they were so loud and noisy it was incredible. Not what I want in a hostel where all I want to do is sleep. I ended up going to a hotel after I had paid for two nights there. Since I left in the middle of the first night it was understandable I didn't get my money back for the first night, but they refused to give me my money back for the second night, even though I checked out before 10 a.m. To be fair, they do have a sign saying they don't refund money for night already paid for (hmm...has this happened before?) but unfortunately, I didn't see it till AFTER I'd already paid. I really think they should reconsider this policy. It's really not fair and I don't think unreasonable to refund money if they are given notice before 10 a.m. (their checkout time).

The bunk beds are not crammed into a room and there was enough space for everyone. The location of this hostel is very good, a few minutes from the train station and city center. The breakfast here is one of the best I have seen in the UK.

The staff were really kind and funny. The showers were quite okay. We'd like to point out that the bed springs in our bedroom were something to skip in our worst nightmares. The location was quite good, as you could forget the car for a couple of days and roam in the city. The building was impressive in its Georgian magnificence.

My first impression of this hostel was a really good one--it had nice and friendly staff, and a good atmosphere between all people. The TV room was perfect to just relax and watch a movie. The hostel was excellently located, and the included breakfast was good. I will probably be back!

There were too many people living in the hostel room for weeks on end; they had taken over the room. It had a great location and fun, friendly staff. It was also clean. I'd recommend it.

Very helpful staff. I am not sure I would call the breakfast "giant", but it's pretty good. York has clean rooms, sheets, and bathrooms. It is very well-located, although it can be noisy at night sometimes--there are something like 13 pubs on the same road, and there are lots of people out for a good time! The kitchen is good but a little small; it has a bar and tv room downstairs in the "dungeon". All in all, it's a pretty good hostel (the only 18 bed dorm I've ever stayed in; luckily there are no snorers!!).

This place was alright. There's internet access for a pound and free cereal in the morning. The staff was nice and there were some interesting people there. Unfortunately most people seem to go to bed early. At least the beds were clean. Only 2 of the 4 guys showers worked, but I didn't have any problem getting to one.
