The Hostelz.com Review
The Asylum Sydney a great place to start out in Australia. This hostel is great, everyone is very sociable and eager to meet new people. The dorms generally only have about six beds (bunks) so you can get to know some people very well and there is a varied nightlife with Mad Mondays being the highlight of the week. Both breakfast and dinner is included in the rate. There is also a returnable deposit.

Location

The Asylum is behind the Holiday Inn, Kingscross. It's about a minute walk to the nearest train station or supermarket and easy to find your way to and from the town centre or the Harbour. As it's so close to the station, it's easy to get anywhere from here -- Central Station is about two stops away. You would have to ring ahead to inquire about limited parking.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The bathrooms are quite clean (except for shower screens which are overlooked for weeks on end!), some dorms have an en-suite whereas others are across the hall; one bathroom in the basement even has its own bath (this bathroom is kept absolutely spotless, maybe for tours, visitors, or photoshoots?). Private rooms are often off the dorm rooms so you may have to go through a dorm to get to your room. You will also, most likely, be sharing a bathroom with them too.

The bedrooms have a lock that has to be engaged (they don't automatically lock) so it can be a worry that someone might forget to lock the door. There is furniture such as chairs, bedside cabinets, and wardrobes and there is also a fridge in at least one dorm room -- but no private lockers. But the bathroom functions well with space inside the shower for stuff but with only one soap-dish and no hooks. There is no hook for towels either, but the doorknob works just as well!

Some dorms have a private balcony which is lovely for smokers, putting out washing to dry, or just hanging out. Cleanliness is not a priority in this hostel, either in the bedrooms, bathrooms, or common areas, and as a result can be rather dirty.

Common Spaces

The common room is a lovely place with three settees, a large table with chairs, a sink, lots of books, and some board games. There is also a TV with two different DVD players and there are two PCs hooked to the internet with free access. The DVDs can run music CDs too. Since the common room is also where people eat their meals, it can get a bit scruffy.

The kitchen is quite small but doesn't get too busy as the free breakfast is placed in the large common room and dinner is provided at a local pub. There is a large amount of condiments and rice available for free. Next to the kitchen is a yard with picnic benches and two gas BBQs. The hostel is very much a party place and it's very easy to meet people and there also seems to be a good mix of long- and short-termers so it's common for people to stay longer than they thought! You can also pay for a late checkout.

Summary

The Asylum as its a fantastic place for the single traveler as it's a easy to meet new people. It's also convenient for so many places and not having to worry about your main meals is a major plus. On the downside, it's not especially clean. If you came to party you've come to the right place, but you won't be the only person having to get up early for work the next day!

Very poor
Do not stay at this hostel. The place does not deserve your hard earned money. We booked the Asylum hostel as we were told it was one of the last places available to stay over the Christmas period. When we landed in Sydney we checked out other places to stay in that area and found many places were much cheaper even over the whole Christmas period. Anyway, we decided then to call to the asylum and explained that we would not be staying and they could keep our deposit of €450euro which was paid by card before leaving for Australia. We asked the man at reception if we were going to be charged the full price and were told no. But the asylum then proceeded to take the money from us totaling $1100 each for five people for eleven nights. Had we known this, we definitely would have stayed, but as we lost our deposits which was a reasonable profit for any business for no cost inflicted we decided not to stay. After realising we had been charged the money we asked to speak with the manager of the hostel who said it is not company policy to give refunds, yet this policy was not stated to us when we arrived there. Also they said they sent us all the information which didn't arrive until nearly four weeks after the hostel was booked and so by that time we already had left the country and were unaware of the cancellation date which was not provided on the original receipt we received after booking. All we were given was dates, price, deposit paid, and directions. This company has not tried to work with us on any level even with so many inadequacies on their part, and this i feel must be reported. For those wishing to stay in Sydney, please at all costs stay away from this hostel.

Party!
at first glance asylum seems a bit of a dump, but after staying here for a while you notice that everything was cleaned repeatedly on a daily basis. the only problem is that the carpet is old and stained and the walls need painting. The staff are great! constantly trying to get you to have a good time! I have stayed at six hostels in sydney -- this place is the best. Party central -- close to all nightlife and the city centre. the mad monday party is insane! really cheap but you get a lot of bang for your buck! trust me you cannot visit sydney without staying at this place. you will never forget it. just make sure you are there for monday night!

I was there in December 2006. The kitchen was new and very convenient with what all i needed. It is even nicer than my kitchen in my home on Germany. Thank you Asylum Sydney for introducing me to new friends whom i am now traveling with. I can't wait to be in Cairns at the end of my trip.

This was our first hostel in Oz and thankfully it wasn't the sign of things to come. This place was a complete dump, very dirty and smelly. The place in generally dingy and needs a lot of work. It was impossible to cook anything in their 'kitchen' as all at disposal was a fridge, microwave, and a bathroom sink. Dirty plates on table in there, flies everywhere. Room were expensive compared to all other hostels we stayed in all over Oz. Have no guilt in saying this as we were really disappointed with Asylum. Do not stay here.

The most dirtiest hostel we stayed in in the whole of our round the world trip! The rooms and bathrooms were bearable but the kitchen was absolutely disgusting. Its a small room with a dirty fridge full of what looked like gone-off food, a filthy microwave on a table, and there is just a sink with no draining boards or storage space for dishes. So, the dishes are just kept either on the mantlepiece of the fireplace or on top of the wardrobe thats in there. It was full of flies. There were two small tables to eat your food (if you were brave enough to!) and nowhere to even prepare food. Needless to say we ate out the whole time! Even the staff used to moan about how dirty it was! Just imagine the dirtiest student house, times it by ten and then you'll know what its like! I just can't stress it enough!

Very dirty. The "kitchen," which only has a microwave and a sink, is full of dirty dishes and flies. The whole hostel smells damp and especially the downstairs rooms. Not healthy. The cleanliness of the rooms and bathrooms is debatable.

Its expensive, including the pay was TV and fridge but it wasn't there. Its a absolutly dirty place and not really healthy. Kitchen, there was no real kitchen or fridge to use. all the dirt was around the hostel included unwashed dishes and cups which must lie down there two weeks or longer.
