The Hostelz.com Review
Summer Lodge Hostel is a great place to leave your bags for a few days whilst you go exploring Sabah, as Kota Kinabalu is the main place of passage for most.
The Location
The hostel is located next to a busy pedestrianised street with bars and restaurants in the centre of Kota Kinabalu. This street gets very loud at weekends when they have live music and karaoke. It is located just above the Pizza Hut on Jalan Gaya and there is a large Sunday market there every week.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms all have air conditioning and most rooms are dormitories of six beds, but they also have private rooms. There are no lockers or hooks/shelves in the rooms but the beds are quite comfortable. However, the reception staff might make you pay extra for an extra blanket if you are cold because of the air conditioning. But there is a remote control in the room, if you can get all the lodgers to agree on a temperature. To avoid the noise of the Saturday night fever, choose a windowless room on the third floor. The bathrooms are clean (as are the rooms) and have hot showers with liquid soap dispensers. There are sufficient bathrooms for everyone, even though this is quite a large hostel. Toilets are European-style flush toilets and there is always paper.
Common Spaces
The common lounge is nice and comfortable, with sofas and chairs and three or four free internet PCs. It's large and roomy and a great place to meet fellow backpackers. There is also a dining room for the free breakfast, which features toasts, jams, and peanut butter; coffee and tea; and fresh fruit if you get up early enough (breakfast starts at 6 a.m.!). There are a few books for exchange, a satellite TV that shows lots of English-speaking films, and the reception has ice creams for sale. You can also store your bags for free in a locked, safe, storage room -- even if you go away for a few days (to climb Mt. Kinabalu) or for a few weeks. The staff are very helpful.
Summary
Summer Lodge is well located and fairly comfortable. However it gets pretty noisy because of the party street downstairs.
