You can’t miss the bright-purple building right in the center of downtown Greymouth -- it's Duke Backpackers, a colorful, friendly, and comfortable hostel. The building houses not only the hostel, but also a bar and internet cafe. Everyone staying in the hostel receives a voucher for a free beer at the bar.
The accommodations, all on the first floor, are very comfortable. The rooms are spacious, and the bathrooms and common areas are much cleaner than most. Just down the hall from the showers, a small room has free tea and coffee to make in the provided kettle. The TV lounge has large cushions and pillows to relax on and a selection of DVDs is supplied.
Downstairs on the ground floor, you can walk through the door across from reception into the bar. It has a pub-like feel, with a good crowd of locals and travellers and a free pool table. Be warned -- there are a couple of sleeping rooms above the bar, and some noise does filter up through the floor. It’s not unbearable and the owners try to make sure the bar doesn’t get out of hand when it gets late, but if you’re a light sleeper you may want to ask to be put elsewhere.
The hostel also has a large kitchen and equally large dining area downstairs, and an internet cafe/coffee shop is open during the day. The shop also serves as the hostel's internet access. You can log on after-hours with a code from reception. The hostel has a nice laid-back feel, and the owners try to make sure everything is in place for a pleasant stay.
