Steamers Beach Backpackers is actually part of a larger holiday park that has camping sites and various other lodges and cabins. Overall, it is a great facility. The kitchen, toilets, and showers are very clean and well stocked. The kitchen and TV lounge are located in a separate building adjacent to the bunk house and seem to be new or recently remodeled -- especially the kitchen with four burner ranges, two ovens and two microwaves plus four separate sinks and industrial-size fridges providing lots of room for everyone.
The bunk house seems a bit older and noise travels easily through the thin walls. The entrance doors at each end of the bunk house seem new and are self-closing, which is great for security but bad if your room is near the door and it is constantly slamming -- something to keep in mind when you book. The other drawback that is that the complex is a fifteen-minute walk outside of the core of restaurants and shopping in Te Anau. What is sacrificed in this distance to town was gained with the fact that the lakefront beach was right across the street. From the hostel it is a beautiful forty-fiveminute walk to the beginning of the Kepler track and the walk is a lakeside track that goes through a small wildlife preserve. For the active types, there's a lot to do in close proximity.
All in all, a good sleep. Let the bus driver know you're staying there and they're likely to drop you at the door and save you the walk out from town.
