Hostelz.com's Review
Golden Gobi Guesthouse & Hostel is the best hostel in Ulan Bator! It’s generously sized and maintains a friendly and personal atmosphere. Its greatest strength is in providing its guests with tourist information and guided tours of the Mongolian countryside. The staff are very friendly and exceedingly helpful -- they really go above and beyond to ensure you have a great time and have all the information you need to negotiate Mongolia.

The Location

The hostel is situated in the centre of Ulan Bator and is well placed for exploring Mongolia’s capital city and beyond. Banks, restaurants, cafés, shops, public transport links, and, of course, the city's sites, are all only a short walk away. To find the hostel itself, you take the turning off Peace Avenue between the state department store and the Adidas store, and then turn right at the camping store. The hostel is on the other side of the park on the far left corner of the square. You can’t miss it as the Golden Gobi sign is proudly on display. Parking is available but it is not advisable; a secure parking facility with a night security guard is available for motorbikes three hundred meters away at the local car market.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms vary in size and are conveniently laid out along the main corridor. Two separate showers are available as well as two separate toilets. Whilst the dorms themselves do not have storage, a secure space for luggage is available if you ask a member of staff. The bunk beds are adequately comfy and the pillows are generously sized to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep.

Common Spaces

Golden Gobi has a kitchen with the usual amenities as well as a free filtered water cooler for guest use. Just off the kitchen is the hostel reception and lounge/briefing area, which is used to inform the guests of the various tours that are available -- and there are lots, with a tour to suit any taste and budget. A second common area is available downstairs with soft chairs and big-screen TV, as well as two guest computers. The Wi-Fi is decent, but bandwidth is reduced at peak times as many guests are all trying to use it at the same time. The common areas are excellent and really make you feel welcome and at home, whether you are planning a tour or just relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. The hostel is clean, tidy, and well decorated throughout.

From the moment you arrive, you’ll be made to feel welcome and the staff will bend over backwards to assist you in anything you need. It has some decent facilities but it’s their local knowledge and the friendly atmosphere that will make you want to return. Golden Gobi is well priced and it’s refreshing to find hosts that actually care about their guests. Moreover, the tours that are available will ensure that you connect with a range of different people.

5   Overall a really good hostel Great hostel. Reliable hot water. Clean. Great service, helpful staff. Free breakfast, with eggs and unlimited tea and coffee. Very central location, next to supermarket and main shopping centre. Unreliable Wi-Fi (although this may have been out of hostel's control). Beds were hard.  , age 26, Australia ()
4   Great stay with fantastic people, but some misrepresentations Awesome rooms, awesome place. Could use just a few more windows. Chill room and lounge area are great, and staff are generally super nice. Only flaw is the misrepresentation by the hostel. On this website, they advertise "free transport" from the airport, which is not at all true. It will cost about $25 US. Moreover, although there is a free breakfast, it is pretty much only bread and a bit of jam. Nothing too spectacular. That being said, their tours are great, and the staff often surprises with impromptu dinners and treats. It's awesome!  ()
