The Hostelz.com Review
HI - Karlovy Vary - Quest Hostel & Apartments is a high-end spa town full of expensive hotels, so naturally Quest Hostel & Apartments, a member of the Hostel International, is the first place many people will go to.

Location

To go to the hostel from the main train and bus terminal, you need to take a ten-minute bus ride, and then a five-minute walk. The hostel is located at the top of a hill, so be prepared for a long and steep walk up a cobbled road if you come from the city center of Karlovy Vary. The reception of the hostel is in the adjacent bar. There is no elevator, so be prepared to take your luggage up to your room. During our visit, the receptionist made it clear to us that this was her second day at work so she could not answer our questions.

Rooms and bathrooms

There are four floors in the hostel, and each floor has two rooms. Our room had ten beds. The rooms are big, bright, and basic. The kitchen is big and so is the bathroom. They are clean but we find that some housekeeping needs to be done. The fridge, which is empty, has its freezer flooded with a smelly brownish liquid. The oven is dirty, the knob of the kettle lid is melted, the toilet seat is broken, and hot water from the shower is lukewarm. Other than that, the room is fine.

Common spaces

Aside from the kitchen in the room, the other common area in the hostel is perhaps the adjacent bar -- you will have to leave your room and walk downstairs. People smoke inside the bar. There's a lovely outdoor sitting area, though. There are no computers but there's Wi-Fi within the premises. A very light breakfast is included, which the receptionist gave us at the bar the day before. You have to walk all the way upstairs again to put it in the fridge.

Summary

During our visit in June, the hostel was still operating in its off-season hours (reception starts at 4 p.m.), so when we checked out in the morning, we could not find any place or locker to deposit our luggage. Nevertheless, in a place full of expensive hotels, we consider this hostel a luxury.

Hostelz.com Guest Reviews
1  Quest is not the Best! We have been Hostelling International members for over forty years and always use hostels wherever we travel, despite our senior years. They always maintain high standards of cleanliness and comfort, providing the best value for any traveler. I have to say that Quest Hostel & Apartments is the most disappointing I have ever stayed in in all my hosteling days! I can only think of one worse! It is certainly far from the high standards demanded of HI accommodation! Quest is supposed to be a HI hostel and therefore should be subject to the same rules and regulations. There appeared to be only one staff member when we arrived at the Reception, which is also the dingy Bar. It was packed with rowdy young tourists who fortunately were on the point of departure. The owner/manager was friendly enough and booked us in. He told us that we would not be given the private double room we had booked, but a six-bedded room just for the two of us. This was not a problem. He also then informed us that we would not be given any breakfast the next day, as his ninety-year old grandmother was celebrating her birthday and he was leaving right away for the party. He gave us a small discount on the price quoted, due to the lack of Breakfast, and showed us where our rooms were, through another grubby door next door to the Bar. When we got to the room, up two floors of steps, there was no toilet paper to be found and I immediately went down to ask the manager for it, but he had already locked his office and there was a notice stuck on the outside of the Bar door that he would be gone for the rest of the day/weekend? No breakfast/no service/no toilet paper! Had the place been maintained in a clean state, it would have been great value. However, the apartment we had was far from clean. The floors had obviously just been given a cursory cleaning (chairs still stacked on tables) but the bathroom had not been cleaned for a long time -- I would not have dared to take a bath/shower in it, so filthy was it! Everything was grubby. The apartment itself was huge -- a six-bunk bedded room, a large TV lounge (the TV was working although the remote was not) a huge kitchen, separate toilet and bathroom. We would have preferred a small clean bedroom, without all the rest! I have to say the bed linen was clean and freshly laundered. Quest is miles up a hill from the centre of Karlovy Vary, but there is a good bus service nearby, so that is no problem. There is also a very nice restaurant with local food and reasonable prices nearby -- Galerka, highly recommended! I have to credit the manager for pointing us in that direction, rather than the overpriced restaurants in the old town centre. The following morning, after getting up coffee-less (we had expected the great buffet breakfast as advertised so had not thought of bringing our own!) -- we dropped the keys in the post box as we had been told to do. The manager was nowhere in sight, his office and bar still locked up. All in all, not a good impression! In my book, cleanliness is a top priority in any budget accommodation. I do not need a TV, kitchen, or huge living room, merely a state of cleanliness and a well run establishment, with helpful staff on hand at all hours of the day to give advice, as is the case in all the HI hostels I have stayed in, in many countries worldwide. The exterior of Quest is grubby and badly looked after as well -- all in all a very depressing place, not to be recommended to anybody, no matter how tight a budget you are on!  , South Africa ()
