If you plan on staying in the lovely town of Russell, consider staying in this nice little owner-operated hostel. It is a ten minute level walk from the pier (where you will arrive if you catch the ferry from Paihia) in a quiet local neighborhood. Pick up a local map or the hostel's brochure in the visitor center there at the end of the pier for directions.
The hostel is actually the owner's transformed home, with one large dorm room, a few smaller rooms, and a kitchen and living room. All the rooms are paneled in wood, lending a very cozy feel, and certainly one of the neatest things is the large number of Maori paintings, baskets, and other artifacts. When you arrive, the owner will welcome you in and show you around--things are more informal here, without an official reception desk.
Entering the house, you will find the living room with television and couches, which in turn leads to the kitchen on the left. The owner lives on the property (she can often be found in the house, but also lives in another building on the property right outside) and you will probably find the conditions very clean and accomodating. The kitchen is well-equipped and includes a dishwasher(!) she asks you to use. There are a couple of computers available in the living room as well. Outside in the front is a nice garden area with seating, and out back is additional garden area with some pet birds and a barbeque. It all has a welcoming feel, and you'll want to sit down and relax.
The dorm room is cool and quiet, with very comfortable beds complete with sheets and duvets, as well as the nice touch of curtains that can be pulled around some of the bunks for privacy. Some of the beds have nightstands and lamps next to them, and the bathrooms are just outside in the hall.
If you're looking for a place to stay in Russell, definitely consider Sheltered Waters. You might want to book ahead in the busier season though as this hostel's name is becoming more widespread!
