Felt like an uninvited guest staying at someone's home. Pretty much sums it up. These young kids obviously are a very tight knit group and aside from the purely posturing friendliness at the beginning were not interested in letting me listen in on their in-group conversations or even include me in any reindeer games. Felt very left out and unwelcome, especially when they had another friend of theirs show up from some bicycling trip and all sat around that kitchen table laughing and joking and hugging got very quiet when I walked in (smiling) to get a cup of water -- really to try and make small talk and join the fun, but it seemed they just wanted me out of their way so they could relax more. Not that I blame them, living where you work must be a drag sometimes. Oh yeah and the bike guy seemed to think very highly of himself and his bike shop, which really aren't all that impressive, either one. Overall a negative experience I would not recommend. There were drunks hanging out in the garden all day as well. Bleh, I sound so nit picky and whiny don't I? Still, I can't think of one positive about the place.

Do it yourself, nice place I stayed at Chez Cascadia for a night. We rented out the whole place for a gathering of young activists and it was wonderful to have a cheap sleeping place and planning grounds. I don't think I saw the owners more than once, but that was fine as we were more than capable of doing our dishes, feeding ourselves. Pretty clean and comfortable. Eco-friendly. I enjoyed my stay.

I stayed here in the spring of 2006. There's still some growing pains with Chez Cascadia. The space was nice, the location great (in West Olympia not too far from downtown), and the staff was friendly. However, the staff was not around that much (and difficult to reach on the phone when making a reservation), so you're pretty much on your own. This didn't lend itself to cleanliness -- the bathroom was pretty dirty (especially the tub) and the kitchen in disarray. Rather than look at the piles of dirty dishes, I just dove in and did them. It would help if the staff implemented some sort of "do a chore" system if they're not able to take care of it themselves. And there were a few "extended stay" people there that brought the atmosphere of the hostel down. I don't think that this place is terrible, and it has the potential to be something great. All it needs is for the staff/owners to actually get behind the idea of running a hostel. Hostels take work and dedication, not a minimal initial investment and then the place will magically run itself. As it stands, it felt less like staying in a hostel and more like staying with your old college roommates, if your old college roommates charged you to stay with them.
