The Hostelz.com Review
Pippies Beachhouse is a great hostel in Rainbow Beach. They provide free breakfast and a free BBQ on Wednesday nights. It is a great place to stop before or after Fraser Island.

The Location

All three of the main hostels in Rainbow Beach are right next to each other, and right across from the bus stop -- very easy to find. It's about a five-minute walk in one direction to one major grocery store, and a five-minute walk in the other direction to the strip of local shops and restaurants and the beach. Pippies does have a number of parking spaces available on the property, and there is plenty of parking on the street as well.

Rooms and Bathrooms

Pippies has two areas containing dorm rooms. The first set or dorms are right off the kitchen, nearest to reception. The other set is in a house, just to the right of the kitchen, but in a separate building. Request to stay in the house, since it won't have constant kitchen noise. Each dorm room has four beds. Mattresses are a bit thin but sheets are provided, blankets can be rented from reception, and the rooms are cleaned every day.

Pippies prohibits sleeping bags, so there's very little chance of bedbugs. They do not provide lockers, but do offer luggage storage in a locked shed for people going to Fraser island. Keys are necessary to enter the hostel after reception closes, and there are locks on the dorm room doors as well. Double rooms are also available. They also offer bunk beds in a large tent, but that will only save a dollar or two, so it's best just to stay in the normal dorms.

Regarding bathrooms, there are a few sets of separate toilets and showers off the kitchen, and another three spacious full bathrooms inside the house. They are also cleaned daily, but since there are only a few, there can be a queue. The bathrooms in the house have plenty of space to change/hang clothes.

Common Spaces

Pippies has plenty of common areas. Right in front of reception are a number of picnic tables, and a few hammocks as well. They also have a campfire pit and do a free BBQ on Wednesday nights. There is plenty of space to relax and talk to other travelers. There is a living room in the house with a DVD player, and DVDs are available to borrow from reception. Pippies also has a small pool area with a few lounge chairs.
Laundry and internet facilities are available.

One downside is the kitchen. Although there is plenty of counter space, fridge space, and seating, there is only one small stove and one normal-sized sink. The kitchen is always busy, so there is often a queue for cooking or washing dishes.

Pippies is a social hostel, but not a party hostel. They have "quiet time" after 9:30, but people can still stay up to chat and hang out by the campfire, but are suggested to go to the beach or a bar to party. The other hostels next door have music two nights per week, but it's easier to get a good night's sleep at Pippies.

Most people go to Rainbow Beach to go to Fraser Island, so there is a constant stream of people coming in and out, listening to intro to Fraser videos, and organizing their trips. Pippies organizes self-drive trips to Fraser and can book other activities as well. They sometimes offer boomerang-making classes as well.

Summary

Overall, Pippies is a good hostel. It has a good balance of everything. It is neither too rowdy nor too quiet. Room size is adequate, bathrooms are big, location is great, and there is plenty of space around the hostel to spread out and relax. It is a good place to stay before or after Fraser Island.

1 Criminals -- Stole our money
More than a hostel, this place operates trips to Fraser Island. I went to such trip through them. To get the car we had to give our credit card details. A short time after we started driving the car broke down completely. We had to wait for hours for a replacement car. It was absolutely not our fault. We drove very carefully and the mechanic they sent told us that there is no way we caused this damage. Also, their mechanic was driving way rougher than us, so if his driving was fine, they really can't blame us for our driving. They charged our credit cards for the damage. They basically told us that if they don't charge us, they have to pay themselves. Thus they have to charge us. They also categorized the damage as underbody damage, which it wasn't in any way. This was just the only thing they could charge us for. Because we were just a group of backpackers traveling around, it was not practical for us to sue them in court. Knowing this they must have found an easy victim in stealing money from backpackers this way.

1 Pippies has all the quaint charm of a flea-ridden crack den. The price we paid would be fair if we were given the narcotics to match the aura. If the damp sheets and cement and bubble gum-smeared walls failed to help you sleep, the prospect of a thousand parasites gorging on your flesh certainly did. We paid 60 dollars for a double room (translation, mattress), that didn't even contain a bin never mind any furniture. It was the worst hostel we have stayed in in oz (and we've been to airlie beach), the only plus side is the fact that many more horrors are concealed as they refuse to put up any kind of lights. Plus the staff are totally inept and dozy.

1 The rooms are cheap but you get what you pay for -- the top bunks have really uncomfortable metal bars that run across the middle that you can easily feel through the flimsy mattress. We had a room next to kitchen so were woken really early, and you had to get in early for the free breakfast if you wanted some before it ran out. The whole place looks pretty run down and I ended up covered in bites after sitting on the settee! On plus side, the room did have air con, and all the bathrooms were clean, if small.

5 I stayed only one day/one night in rainbow beach, i was quite in a hurry to finish my east cost trip before my return plane left from sydney. i went to the pippies beachhouse with no idea of it before, but my stay was great! the guy at the reception was very helpful and friendly. I arrived early in the morning and he gave me a free breakfast, even if I didn't pay for the night before. I was alone in my four-bed room, which was perfect for 20$ a night! Even more, there was a free BBQ at night (like every wednesday), and I had another free breakfast the next morning. There was a special night with Didgeridoo demonstration, many people talking to each other in a very good atmosphere. If you wanna go to Rainbow Beach, go to the Pippies! Staff is great and the place as well!

2 Very basic. Very small. Very noisy. Loud partying till 2:30 a.m. Double room right next to a bathroom with loud plumbing. Once got to sleep awoken early as well. Not a place I would recommend unless you're young and don't care.

5 I intended to stay in Rainbow Beach for two weeks but ended up staying for seven! Pippies is just a great place to stay, relaxed, well kept, clean, and tidy. I have no hesitation in recommending it to you and there's a free BBQ on Wed night. It's the perfect place to stay when you want to explore this area. Fantastic beach which lives up to it's name, cosmic paragliding site at the Carlo Sand Blow where I spent many hours skimming the sand or flying up down the beach. I cancelled a week in Sydney also ten days in L.A. then extended my stay by another two weeks to stay at Pippies, that says it all.

5 This hostel is fantastic! The free barbecue is better than any other, (including vegetarians), the beds are comfy, the kitchen is cosy and very clean, the showers are fabulous. It's really easy to get to know people because the whole hostel is just like a home and has great communal areas, and the staff and owners of the hostel are great too! Many people planned to stay for just a few nights, then were there for a couple of weeks (me included!). I would highly recommend that you stay at Pippies.

5 What a great hostel, the best one so far. It's more a house/home than a hostel with a kitchen like you know it from home and a nice veranda. Everything is very clean and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I wish I could take this hostel on my trip wiith me. You can go sailing for free.

5 Wow -- where do I start!? Great place, relaxed, homely, clean, friendly, helpful friendly staff and owners -- amazing place to spend a few days chilling after staying in busy, cramped, smelly hostels for weeks on end or after Fraser Island. Breakfast is free, BBQ Wednesday nights and you don't just get a hot dog and a piece of bread -- oh no -- and it's free! You can sit on the sofa and watch a DVD, lay in the hammock and read a good book, sit on the decking and chill out with some friends, few drinks and some good music, borrow a boogie board or fishing rod and head down to the beach -- you'll come for two days and stay a week guaranteed.
