The Hostelz.com Review
Peppertree Lodge is a friendly larger hostel, just off Kings Road in the center of Paihia. It's a close walk to the beach and town center. Peppertree has free bikes and kayaks to use as well as heaps of DVDs and two lounge areas and a large outdoor BBQ picnic area. It is laid back and a great place to meet other travelers. This is one of the most popular hostels in Paihia, with a constant flow of guests.
The Location
The location is perfect, right next to the bay and beach. There is a grocery and a few bars and restaurants within a short walking distance. The free bikes make it easy to get to Countdown and the other side of town. You can get into town with an easy, flat walk.
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are nice and clean, with comfortable beds -- this is one of the cleanest hostels we have ever been to! Peppertree does free bag storage, which is nice if you are heading over to Russell or traveling around. Showers and bathroom are unisex -- all exceptionally clean.
Common Spaces
This hostel is perfect for hanging around. The downstairs lounge has a giant TV with a spacious kitchen and plenty of storage area. We especially like grilling out on the barbie at night and playing games. Everyone seems really friendly. Free bike and kayak use make it a really good deal -- you can really enjoy the area. The Bay of Islands is gorgeous, with a constant flow of visitors from cruise ships as well as other tourists.
Summary
We like this hostel -- it's a friendly place with cool people around and the great location makes it worth staying here. There are many hostel options available on King Street, but Peppertree seems like an ideal choice -- there are plenty of chill people without being obnoxious or too loud. We recommend staying here and going over to Russell to get some amazing view of the islands.

Loved it. Awesome kitchen, clean rooms with super comfy beds (a rare find!), and great service. Everyone was friendly and yet the atmosphere was quiet and relaxing. Got a good nights sleep every night. Make use of the free kayaks and tennis equipment, kayaking around the bay was one of our favorite activities. Definitely staying here again when we go back to Paihia, reasonable rates and an easy walk to all the best parts of Paihia! — Anonymous , USA (2011-04-30)
