4 Nice place, good memories, but manager had a bad attitude
I stayed there in Oct '94, from what i remember, i had a really good time there, but the manager (a big blonde guy) had a really bad attitude. i was sitting quietly with two of my friends, and he kicked my drink over! and it wasnt an accident, he kept trying to eyeball me. Now i dont take crap from anyone, and this guy was about two minutes from getting laid out, but i had my friends there and we were off out clubbing and moving on the next day. I really liked the place and have some great memories there but that guy was an absolute arse!

1 Extremely disappointing
Please, dont go there! There are plenty of better options to stay in a cheap place in the old City. When I arrived there I wanted to stay for a month and for security reasons I preferred to get a private room in order to leave my laptop and all my belongings in a safe spot. So for 30 euro a night, i was directed to a very dirty room with bed linen that weren't washed for the past ten years (smelled like sweat and sh*t, and im not kidding); a mattress that was completely broken and not thicker than my sweater; a one square meter bathroom with toilet, sink, and shower all on top of each other (of course the toilet was not clean and there were still the leftover from the previous customer). All this for 30 euros (40 US dollars) -- internet of course doesnt work in the private rooms, and please dont even think that the pictures that are displayed on this page are pictures of this hostel -- this is simply a lie! I left after three days, and moved to another location. when i was taking my things out of my rooms, i heard one of the customers yelling in the entrance and protesting that some of the staff stole some of her belongings, and that she wanted to leave the hostel. ive stayed in many many cheap hostel throughout the whole world, but this is really not worth visiting!

5 My second home!
I lived at the New Palm for two months during the summer of 2009. Location is amazing -- right outside of the Damascus gate and very very close to the buses into the West Bank. The people are incredibly friendly and willing to help out with anything that you need. If you want a bit more luxury (TV and AC in your room), there are options for that, but I was more than happy living in an eight-person dorm room for an extended period of time. Free internet, free tea and coffee, common room with lots of seating, sufficient kitchen, veranda with a view of the Old City -- what else can you ask for!? The New Palm is definitely my home away from home and everyone there is just like family!

5 I thought it was great for the price.
For 11.25 per night (dollars). Free tea and coffee, free internet. Everybody else charges extra. Great location just outside the Damascus gate. Walking distance to a lot of places you want to see.

4 I loved it!
Well I was there in 2005/2006. It was strange for me in my first time but people in Palm Hostel is really friendly, they want to help you always. A lot of coffee and tea, a marvelous place for younger tourists.

1 Zero
The staff in a place makes money on keeping deposits placed on the internet. When I came down to a booked private room $20 person/night, the room was not ready. It has not been cleaned for a month at least, the floor was sticky, dark in a bathroom and a room. Bathroom was full of hair, dirty closet, there were no bed linen and a bed was broken to such an extent that if one decided to stay there, one'd have to place the mattress on the floor not to fall down from the bed. I've been traveling around the world and have never before been in such a messy place (none of my travel-companions were). This place does not meet even lowest standards. I gave the hostel employee four hours to clean the room and bring bed linens. The man that was working there was unable to do it. He refused to give back the deposit of $24. He excused himself that he'd been working there only for six days and did not check the all rooms there (ha! ha!) and said that's right now he has holidays time that lets him cash money, but not provide service for it! I did not stay overnight. It was very unpleasant situation to land on a street after 10 p.m. with a big backpack and search for a new place (I was lucky). The man at the end shouted at me -- for goodbye! I do discourage everyone from this place and inform that pictures do not reflect the reality!

2 Not like it says
the hostel is nothing like it says in the description. The rooms do not have TV (satellite or otherwise), the kitchen is there yes, but is very far from a full one, there is a common room but no place to have a proper meal. The rooms are reasonably clean, but a bit small. There are two computer free to use but one is not working, Wi-Fi is ok but not the fastest, if you want to use your own laptop for surfing and email is very good, but if you want to use the internet for watching streaming media is too slow. They advertise the cheaper trips to the dead sea and this is true but when I try to book a place three days in advance they could not confirm it there and then and even if I kept asking everyday since they could not give me a definitive answer, they kept tell me to wait one more day and they would let me know, in the end I just went and book a trip with a travel agent. The place is in a very good position if you intend to visit the old town and the mount of olive, and if you have a laptop and want to keep in touch with friends and family, otherwise choose another hostel.

1 Bookings not honoured, dismissive and arrogant manager.
Unfortunately my mother and father had a very bad experience at this particular hostel recently in 2008, and I feel that a mention must be made so that balance can come to the several more positive reviews appearing. During their time in Jerusalem about a month ago, they entered the hostel and booked a room in person (with their passport details) for a date three days later. On arrival on that date, they were told the booking was nonexistent. In reality, it appears the booking was simply ignored to make way for somebody who just wished to stay longer in their room. As this was during the Passover time in Jerusalem, this was a dilemma as accommodation was very short. Their only option was to stay in the dorm, with a promise of a room the next day. On the next day, they were told their room would be available later. Around midday, the manager returned and suddenly no rooms were available because once again those occupying it had changed their minds and once again he wasn't willing to honour a booking. Eventually a room did appear, and my mother requested a fan like the ones in the other rooms. Over seven hours this polite and patient request was repeatedly brushed off with all manner of excuses and delaying tactics, and eventually brushed off with humour by the manager in front of other guests. After a long day, still their needs were not being met and the manager was laughing it off. After such disrespect, my father challenged the manager's attitude over what had been a fair request over many hours, and the managers response was to begin repeatedly shoving my father and using intimidating body language, such as getting close up to his face. Naturally my father told him this was not necessary, and eventually had to warn him not to continue, after which he then received insults by the manager and told my mother and father to pack their bags and f*** off (which they didn't do as they had paid for the room already). No doubt people have a different experience to this, but this is one incident that I feel must be highlighted so that people see both sides of the picture.

3 Cheap place to stay while in Jerusalem
The rooms are not like those that are posted on the web site. Luckily I booked a single room with private bath/shower and a working TV back in March of 2007. The price was a little higher for the seventeen days but for me it was worth it. I tend to travel with my own bedding so I was not bothered by the dirty mattress. Otherwise the room, bathroom, and shower were very clean. The TV worked. The TV in the smoking room did not work. First impression of the entire place was a bit dismal, not as clean as I had hope. Free coffee and Tea throughout the day. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the free dinner every night was a treat. Soup mixture of assorted vegetables poured over rice. Though the Internet was free you had to boot people off in order to get on. Just down the front steps to the Hostel was a fruit and vegetable stand to buy items to eat and around the corner was several food vendors selling sandwiches and drinks. No problems with safety. The Hostel is right across from the Damascus Gate and around the corner from the Garden Tomb. Most places that you want to visit are within walking distance. Met some wonderful people there and would book again.

5 Sweet
This hostel became my home for almost a month. The price was half of that anywhere else I found, the staff was great, which made my experience that much better. One of the top five hostel experiences I've ever had, and I've had quite a few! I miss it there.

5 Fun Times
Way back in '93 I had a fine time at The New Palm Hostel. Great folks, location, and facilities. I highly recommend and hope everyone has the fun times I did.

Such a relaxed atmosphere. You have even a free meal every day. Fast internet connection, three PCs and Wi-Fi. Location is great, just fifty meters from the Damascus gate. It is very peaceful on the roof, where I stayed, for just 4.5 EUR! And the linens were ok, no smell, no dirt. If you want to buy food, you don't even have to get out of the building, because a green marketplace extends into the very building's corridor, so you have tomato, potato, onion, grapes. The staff is friendly, they are Palestinians, yet they seem to love people from U.S.A. and western europe. I think some of the guests were even some Jewish youngsters from Haifa, and they spoke friendly with them. If I happen to return to Jerusalem some day, I know for sure where I am going to reside.

5 Home in jerusalem
The Palm hostel was my home for nearly five months while staying in Jerusalem. We stayed in a private room so it was great. Great atmosphere, great staff, good food. I do need to mention however, that those photos posted on the side of this website and any other website don't look anything like the rooms in the hostel.

5 After leaving Tel Aviv, I took up a room in the New Palms Hostel. Where do I start? First off the people staying there are all nice, clean, easygoing people and I met the best people ever. The loos were nice and clean (thank heavens, please keep it up!), and the management is always on-site to keep things in good order. It is great to have the fruit market right down stairs. Thanks to the good old sturdy walls, the noise is minimal! The Restaurants downstairs (and a few steps away) sell falafel (any other fab food) and drinks for a good price. Overall, this hostel is very homey and last but not least the dinner is superb -- you will not go hungry! Thank you Hadim for running such an excellent hostel, I hope to see you all there in the near future!

5 i recently spent five days in Jerusalem while on leave from my kibbutz and was lucky enough to wander into the palm and i have to say, what a hostel! twenty-five sheckels a night is a great rate. shower and toilet facilities are excellent, i can't overstate how great free internet is when thousands of miles from home, and the clientele is as delightful a bunch of characters as you could hope to share a room with anywhere. next time i find myself in the Damascus gate area i will definitely check in again.
