This hostel was ok
This hostel was ok although I think I might try somewhere else next time. Good points -- Had free internet, cooking facilities, and fridge for storage; bathrooms and showers were clean; not too far from rest of Tokyo; had laundry facility right around corner; close to post office and convenience store. English speaking channels like history and MTV, also had movie channels. Staff let us check in early which was good since we got into Tokyo at 5 a.m., staff also spoke good english which is a plus. Bad points -- computers had sh*tty keyboards, not enough room for shoes -- had about 20 pairs all over genkan every morning and night. Paid extra for private room but shouldn't have wasted the money because walls are paper thin. had four-person room on one side of us and a six-person room across the hall, had to use earplugs and could still hear people talking after 11 p.m. Bed was uncomfortable, was basically a box spring (literally could feel the springs), and no electrical outlet in the room. If you want to charge a cell phone or camera you have to do it downstairs in lounge next to the sink, which is dangerous both for electrical fire and also your stuff might get water damaged. If you show up before check-in or stay after check-out you are supposed to pay 1000 yen (about $9.50) just to sit in the lounge, or use their computers (I can understand that for internet but just to sit in the lounge?).

Eventually found this place after visiting the other two branches and it was worth the trek. By the looks of things, Annex has the largest and most modern living area (Smile seemed quite small and the first was tiny), big comfy couches to chill. The place was really clean, although the showers aren't all that private, unless you don't mind changing in your cubicle. Air conditionned at night, bar with free drink is cool (dubious alcohol content in cocktails though -- as with all free drinks!). Dorms are a tad squashy with bags, but nothing serious. Only weird thing was they wanted us to pay two nights upfront, when we wanted to book an extra week for the coming month. Location is decent, but no real night life in the Asakusa area (apart from the hostel bar). Fast internet.

This place is very popular but is not so great in my opinion and I have stayed in over 100 hostels while traveling around the world 4 times. It's dirty (and smells like it), there seems to be jerks that stay here who are 17/18ish who live at home with mummy and daddy so they can't do anything for themselves including put their things away and leaving their close and stuff scattered all over the rooms. Also, the rooms are separated by temp walls which do not reach all the way to the top and the fools can make as much noise as they want and it keeps everyone up at night. Stay at the Oak Hotel in my opinion, the staff their are great and have so much time to help youand it's closer to Ueno station and the place is spotless. Also, they have a bar one block away which is great because hostels with bars on the premises can be dodgy imo.

Only three showers for the males and this is a relatively large hostel. There's a strict no shoes policy and if one person has athlete's foot, the whole place is at risk. The fungus got among here and within days I had a nasty itch. Bring shower shoes and small bags. Like many backpackers in Tokyo, space is a premium. As in several hostels I stayed at in Tokyo, Khaosan did not take bookings over the phone, and even booking on the spot is likely to result in a chaotic bed shifting exercise. Now the good news -- this place is modern and fun. Lots of computers for internet junkies, nice living space, and a constant flow of good people. Count the stars. The complaints are simply an opportunity for improvement.
