Fragrance Backpackers Hostel

Cheap, clean, comfortable, safe, great location
Paid SGD22 a bed per night. There were six of us, so we got a room to ourselves. Everyone gets a door keycards, towel, and generously sized locker with key. It's six to a room with bunk beds, a padded bench, and table. There are enough electricity sockets for everyone's cell phone, which is a nice touch. The mattresses are covered in fake leather vinyl, which can be a little cold initially, but I guess makes it easier to keep bedbugs away. The sheet, blanket, and pillow were clean and didn't smell. All rooms are non smoking and seem to be fairly well enforced. The toilets were clean, and had toilet paper. Showers were great with plenty of consistent hot water and good pressure. We were in the basement which I'm guessing is much quieter that the rooms upstairs since its on a fairly busy street. The air con is silent and very cold. No problems with ventilation even though we were in the basement and there are no windows. We didn't use the TV room or pay laundry facilities but its there. Internet is SGD1 per twenty minutes. Check in was a bit chaotic because they don't allow check ins before 3 p.m. and there's a crowd by the time that rolls around. Staff was polite even though some were on the slow side. The place is pretty full, so I saw quite a few walk ins turned away, but there are quite a few other budget hotels in the vicinity. Plenty of good cheap food around there. There's also a 7-11 nearby so we didn't use the pantry either. Closest MRT station at Little India is about fifteen minutes' walk. There are even more Indian restaurants in the direction. It has zero character compared to other quaint little backpacker places, but if you need a place to sleep at night that's clean, safe, and efficient, I'd stay there.

Very Clean, Service not so great though
My friend and I stayed at Fragrance Hostel on a recent visit to Singapore. While the hostel was indeed clean and well kept, we found the service to be extremely below par. First off, the hostel lost our reservation. We therefore had nowhere to stay our first night in Singapore. Fragrance did nothing to make amends, and we received no response, despite emailing central management multiple times. Additionally, the desk staff seemed overworked and unwilling to help guests with information on Singapore. Although it was a good value in terms of price, the customer service was inexcusable. Therefore, i'd recommend staying elsewhere when visiting Singapore.

This is indeed a superbly clean, hygienic, and most hospitable backpackers in a most accessible and convenient location with excellent security facilities. I have been a member of Youth Hostels International England and Wales since 1950 and this hostel rates amongst the best I have ever stayed in.

Seriously, this hostel is like a hotel! Beautifully clean and run like a well-oiled machine, it's cheap and excellent value for money. Breakfast is included, so is linen and a locker. Dorms are clean and the air-con is virtually silent and really cold. The bathrooms are also -- can you guess? Yes, clean! A good way to spend your money, the location is great, with really easy access to the MRT and the rest of Singapore. Stay here.
