Hostelz.com's Review

Envoy Hostel is the place to stay in Yerevan. The staff are multilingual -- almost all speak fluent English and Russian and some speak French and German and have been working here for a long time and take the words “welcoming” and “hospitality” to a new level! The hostel offers frequent tours to all of the important monasteries and historical sites in Armenia, including Echmiadzin, Noravank, Khor Virap, Garni, and Gegharde. Customized tours can also be arranged.

The Location

Envoy is located on a lovely, shady side street in central Yerevan, just a few minutes' walk from Republic Square, the heart of the city. During the summer months, people are always out strolling North Avenue between the Opera House and the Square until late at night. Yerevan is a small city with a vibrant nightlife and everything is within easy walking distance of the hostel -- the beautiful Opera House, the Blue Mosque, the Cascades, and numerous art museums and restaurants. Or, if you like, the helpful staff will call a taxi for you or direct you to the nearest bus stop. There's also a supermarket just around the corner and down a block. Note, the hostel address is 54 Pushkin but the entrance is actually just around the corner on Parpetsi.

Rooms and Bathrooms

The dorms are clean and spacious; there are two- or three-bed, four-bed, and eight-bed dorms (even the eight-bed dorms are separated into separate four-bed spaces). Private rooms with a double bed are also available. Each bed has its own locker -- bring your own lock. Towels are supplied for a small fee. Laundry service is also available for a small fee. The upstairs bathrooms consist of two toilets, two showers, and a row of sinks. There are also private toilets and smaller shower rooms downstairs, which serve the small dorms behind the kitchen area. We've stayed here several times and have never experienced a problem with a lack of hot water or overcrowding of the facilities.

Common Spaces

The common area is on the lower level, which is great, as it allows those who wish to stay up late the opportunity to do so without disturbing the early-to-bed, early-to-rise types who are sleeping peacefully in the upstairs rooms. You'll meet people from just about anywhere here -- expect lively conversations with Finns, Iranians, Italians, Americans, Irish, and Brits. The kitchen is large and clean and open to guest use. Breakfast is included and is the typical European hostel fare -- lots of bread, jam, butter, and cheese, plus bottomless cups of tea or coffee. If you wish, you can easily supplement this with eggs or fruit juice from the nearby market. A small exchange library, game nights, cable television, and free internet complete the experience. These owners have thoroughly studied the hostel scene and knew what they were doing when they designed this hostel!

Summary

Envoy feels like home to us. There's nothing else like it in Yerevan. This place gets a double thumbs up and a “shot lav” (Armenian for “very good!”) from us.

A bit sterile
Kept clean, but some dorms without windows, and badly ventilated shower cum toilet area. Competent and helpful staff. Affordable by European standard, ovepriced by local. Heavily promoting regional tours at high prices. Service wash expensive at 2500 D. Bible-bashing management provides copy of New Testament with each bed!!!

Clean, Friendly, English/Russian/Armenian speakers
Peace Corps Armenia volunteers stay here all the time. A delightful, friendly, helpful staff. Very clean. Simple breakfast every day of bread, cheese, butter, jam, coffee included. Close to center of city. I highly recommend it.
