1 we had made a booking several months in advance but when we turned up at about 4 in the afternoon we told that the room had not yet been cleaned and that the bed needed repairing. The lady on reception said the room had just been refurbished and in her words was " very nice." I asked if we could look at the room before we paid and was glad I did because the room was absolutely filthy and stank of cigarette smoke. There were horrible black stains on the carpet and thick cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. The bed had completely collapsed. I had a look in the en-suite bathroom and saw that the toilet bowl was filthy, I didn't need to look anymore so went downstairs and told the lady we would not be staying because of the filthy condition of the room. Her only comment was "that's a shame." Don't go there.

5 Toad Hall was recently bought by new owners, Jackie and Terry, in late 2005 and the efforts of these folks is tremendous. I left another hostel I was staying in (after finding it more of a one-night novelty than a place I would like to stay for eight nights) and I found a great deal at Toad Hall with an $18NZ SINGLE room, which was private and nice in the back little guest house. There is a giant kitchen, nice lounge area, free net and laundry and a great rooftop deck. The reason for the lower price of the single room is due to the massive renovation that the place is going through, which I think is highly thoughtful. I didn't mind the paint buckets here and there -- it was nice to see that people actually care about the hostel enough to make it that much better. If I ever get back to Napier, I would love to see what this place becomes. Keep it up!
