1  Zero stars -- dont go there Unfortunately we arrived Napier on a late saturday afternoon and all hostels have been fully booked. The last 2 budget beds to get in Napier were in a double room in Toad hall. Because it was raining heavily we decided to stay and not to sleep in our tent although the room was dirty and there was just 1 blanket. But worst of all, it was loud all night, not only because of the loud music of the young party folks that seemed to stay in all our neighbour rooms and in the lobby. Our room was next to a swing door from old heavy wood and every time a person went through it I thought I will fall out of my bed. Although I used earplugs I could barely sleep. The bathrooms were and also the kitchen. Everywhere used dirty dishes and the "cleaned" dishes did not earn this title. The only good thing was, that we stayed there at the weekend, when we did not had to pay for parking in the streets around, because of course there was no car park for the guest on or off street. We left at 9 in the morning, when the reception was still closed, so we had to be creative to return the key. Seems the receptionist was at the party, too.  , Germany ()
5  Under new management! Great Hostel. Toad Hall has recently been taken over (2010) by a new couple determined to make it one of the best. They are in the middle of a huge refurbishment at the moment. For new photos of how it looks go and look for yourself on their facebook site. We had a fantastic stay here. It was clean and comfortable with very friendly staff. We loved the huge communal spaces and the roof terrace. I would happily recommend this hostel to anyone planning on staying in Napier.  , Switzerland. ()
1  we had made a booking several months in advance but when we turned up at about 4 in the afternoon we told that the room had not yet been cleaned and that the bed needed repairing. The lady on reception said the room had just been refurbished and in her words was " very nice." I asked if we could look at the room before we paid and was glad I did because the room was absolutely filthy and stank of cigarette smoke. There were horrible black stains on the carpet and thick cobwebs hanging from the ceiling. The bed had completely collapsed. I had a look in the en-suite bathroom and saw that the toilet bowl was filthy, I didn't need to look anymore so went downstairs and told the lady we would not be staying because of the filthy condition of the room. Her only comment was "that's a shame." Don't go there.  ()
5  Toad Hall was recently bought by new owners, Jackie and Terry, in late 2005 and the efforts of these folks is tremendous. I left another hostel I was staying in (after finding it more of a one-night novelty than a place I would like to stay for eight nights) and I found a great deal at Toad Hall with an $18NZ SINGLE room, which was private and nice in the back little guest house. There is a giant kitchen, nice lounge area, free net and laundry and a great rooftop deck. The reason for the lower price of the single room is due to the massive renovation that the place is going through, which I think is highly thoughtful. I didn't mind the paint buckets here and there -- it was nice to see that people actually care about the hostel enough to make it that much better. If I ever get back to Napier, I would love to see what this place becomes. Keep it up!  ()
