The Hostelz.com Review
Right in the center of the old town of Vilnius, the cozy Hostelgate makes a great home base.
The Location
The hostel is situated on a small side street just off of a main road where restaurants, banks, and supermarkets can be found. One of the main tourist drags is just a five-minute walk away, the train and bus stations (as well as the dropoff for the buses coming from Kaunas airport, where Ryanair flies) are about a ten-minute walk away, and most areas of interest in the city are easily reach by foot from this hostel (if you can keep your bearings in the winding streets).
Rooms and Bathrooms
The rooms are comfortable, clean, and nicely decorated, with wooden bunks, wooden, floors, exposed wooden beams, and a wooden staircase. Each bed is assigned a locker, and you can get a key from reception for a small deposit or leaving an ID. The dorm room doors, however, don't seem to be lockable.
The eight-bed dorm on the top floor is the best deal, with a spacious en-suite bathroom complete with heated floors and towel warmers, along with lots of shelf space/hooks. The dorms and some of the private rooms on the lower floors must all share two small hall bathrooms, so it can get a bit annoying when the hostel is busy. The dorms could benefit from some hooks, chairs, shelves, or table space, as basically the only surface on which to set things in the rooms is on a bed or inside your locker.
Common Spaces
There is a large common area with a big, comfy, wrap-around leather couch, big screen TV, and a couple of internet computers available for free usage. The kitchen is also large and well-stocked, with several refrigerators; plenty of utensils, dishes, and appliances; and free tea and coffee. There is a large table in the kitchen that seats about ten as well as an outside courtyard area for when the weather is nice. There is a small room near reception where luggage can be stored for free. The entire hostel feels like visiting someone's (large) home, and the kitchen and living room particularly lend this place a relaxed, social atmosphere, like hanging out at a mate's house. Coincidentally, the hostel seems to attract quite a few long-termers.
Summary
All in all, this is a very comfortable and homey small hostel. The location can't be beat, and the hostel is clean and has everything you could need. It's social, but not a crazy party hostel, a great place to get a good night's sleep to make the most of your days in Vilnius, chill in the nice common area, or meet some new friends to go out on the town.

Very good and warm hostel Strong points -- position, staff friendly and helpful, large bathrooms, prices, free internet, wood floor rooms, warm. Weak points -- small common room and bedrooms (but clean). — ildottorgonzo , Italy (2008-02-06)

Best hostel ever. I've spent there a great time. There is really good atmosphere. I hope to visit them again. I met there great people, always helpful staff. It has a very good location, close to city center. Clean and well equipped. — Agnieszka , Poland (2007-04-21)

This is by far the best hostel we've stayed in during our trip to the Baltic countries. The kitchen is great (it even has an oven) and very big. Everything is clean and we really appreciated the quality of the bathroom (the one on the second floor has a heated floor). The price is decent and the location is perfect. It's two minutes away from the Vilnius City Hall in the Old Town. However, the street remains quiet at night. The staff are nice and will help you with problems or questions. — A. Vilius backpackers is a private house turned into a hostel. This sort of thing seems to be quite common in the Baltics. Dorms are put in all the rooms except the kitchen and bathroom. This makes for a cosy environment for about forty people. A couple of drawbacks with such places are that there is limited hot water, presumably because the systems are designed for a family of four and not forty backpackers, the kitchen can get a little cramped, and there do not seem to be any emergency exit signs and fire extinguishers that you would normally associate with a hotel or hostel. I could only find one exit as well, the front door! However this hostel is staffed with very friendly and hardworking people who do their very best to show you a good time. Vilnius does not yet have that anti-tourist prejudice so evident in Riga so going out in the evenings is a delight. Physical security, cleanliness, noise and the welcome are all good and it is really close to the centre in the old town making everything a short walk away! — Andy Hall (2006-10-04)

Decent enough place as described on the website, owner was a bit moody, very interested in the money. Didn't really see you as a person, just a source of income. — Chris (2006-04-25)

This is the best hostel in Vilnius.....full stop....ever! — Per-Adrian (2005-11-10)
