Loch Lochy SYHA Hostel, a charming building, is a much-anticipated respite if you're hiking on the Great Glen Way -- a stone cottage with a courtyard in back and plenty of free parking). If you're coming from the south (Ft. William), it's about a mile north of South Laggan. You have to backtrack a bit on the main road because there isn't direct access across the field to the hostel. Although it's on the main Great Glen highway, there's not much around besides a few B&Bs, so it's fairly quiet.
If you're hiking, you'll want to bring your food with you because there isn't a store in South Laggan and the hostel's reception shop only has a limited selection of nonperishables -- cans of vegetables, small cereal boxes, etc. They have a large drying room and a coin-op laundry (two pounds to wash and twenty pence increments for the dryer). The lounge/dining area is huge, with an internet connection (buy one-pound vouchers that will get you twenty minutes -- it's on a timer and will cut you off if you run out of time. The vouchers are good at any Scottish Youth Hostel Association location, so if you buy extra time, you can use it at other locations.
The kitchen is large and clean, with several sinks and preparation areas, so if a large group is there, you will still have room to boil your ramen. There are two separate areas with couches surrounding coffee tables, so you'll have plenty of room to hang out while your clothes dry from the hike. Clean sleepsheets are provided & they'll ask you to strip your bed when you leave. You're provided with a key for your room, but they lock the front door at 11. The dorms are large -- ours had fourteen beds -- but they could have crammed eight more beds in there, so you'll have space to spread out and find your last pair of dry socks. They're very clean and subdivided with partial walls and there are plenty of hooks and chairs to toss your stuff on.
Our big dorm had a sign on a blocked-off door, saying that the manager was on the other side and to "keep the noise down" -- not a dorm with a party atmosphere. They have separate bathrooms/showers for men and women - there's only two female showers and three sinks, so there can be a wait! But they're very clean and one shower is big so you can bring your dry clothes/valuables in with you and not worry about them getting wet.
They have a lot of information at reception about local hikes and they'll take down your information so if you're hiking alone, someone will come looking for you if you're not back by a certain time. With SYHA hostels, you can book/pay for any of their locations at any of their hostels and can pay for a membership one pound at a time (per night -- rates listed are for members) with a "frequent flier" card.
