Hostelz.com Guest Reviews

This is a small town in the middle of Barley and wheat fields and the famous black Iberian pig farms. The convent has been renovated to house a beautiful, chic and very adult hostel, perfect for the Compostela pilgrims and for the turists that dare to saunter north of Seville. Tv room, very wonderful showers, internet, lounge and bar.
There are at least 6 buses a day from Seville and from Zafra. The hostel has an exhibition dedicated to the namesake ZURBARÄN, who is the region's famous son of the 16th Century. He was at the forefront of the counter-reformation, and so the miriad of paintings one can see in the galleries from Madrid to New York (hey look him up!) are of biblical themes. The warden of the hostel will give all hostel visitors, not only a warm welcome but an interesting tour of an exhibition dedicated to the painter and some of the history of the building...from Franciscans who were exiled to Portugal, the local funny farm and then an outpost for the Franco in the Civil War...and now a cultural centre on the Via de la Plata.
The Via de la Plata is a derivision of an arabic term for the route that goes up to the Pilgrim's route, i.e. Santiago. ON a basic level, it has internet, a really chilledout ambience, beautiful scenery and inhouse chef extraordinaire. I have not stayed at a hostel that felt so much like home as I have at this one...and the setting, a convent, well there's something about it that just gives you a bit of a sweet dream..I think it is the designer bathrooms!. Domitory rooms price from 17 Euros with breakfast, doubles 30-40euros — Lorna , UK (2005-11-11)
