Hostelz.com's Review
Pousada dos Franceses is a good option at a decent price, on a city where most hostels are rather expensive.

The Location<

This hostel is located in a rather posh area of Sao Paulo, close to most touristic attractions, including Avenida Paulista about 15 minutes of up and down walk. Closest metro station would be Brigadeiro in Avenida Paulista - can walk back and forward during the day, but not if you have luggage or at night, as it could be unsafe.

Rooms and Bathrooms

They offer private and shared rooms, with private bathroom. The bathroom is small but shower works fine (good pressure and hot water). The only unusual detail is that, although the bathroom is ensuite, the lavatory is located in the bedroom itself.

The rooms are sunny, although basic. They are comfortable but extremely small — there is almost no room to place the luggage.

The staff and owner (Lete) are very friendly and will help you out booking tours and transportation. But the rules don't help. At 10pm the kitchen (which is well equipped with stove, oven, microwave, fridge, etc.) closes, even though it's not directly adjacent to the rooms and they will not allow you to go inside to even make tea.

Brazilian breakfast is included in the room rate and includes bread, cold cuts, cheese, fresh fruits, fresh fruit juices, jams, honey, butter, cereal, coffee/tea and, in good Brazilian style. It also includes at least a couple of cakes and deserts.

Common Spaces

They have adapted a huge villa and that makes for a very nice layout of the place, with tons of light, and with different hang out areas indoors (dinning tables and living room with couches, TV and paid drinks) and even a small BBQ area outdoors.

It's an affordable pleasant place that had mainly two drawbacks. The first is that WiFi is not free. The second is that in the four days of our stay, they didn't clean the room or bathroom and with several people sharing a space, this really adds up.

People staying range from young backpackers to older travelers, and the atmosphere varies depending on the day, but in general is a relaxed place, that will mostly be quiet during the nights. It's lively during the day, but not "party-like" lively.

If you ask them to clean your room every now and then, we think this would be a great option to stay in Sao Paulo. It is satisfactory overall.
