The Hostelz.com Review
This artsy and cosy hostel is a perfect match for all backpackers! The hostel is a local historic landmark as it is in a renovated house from the early 1900s. The owners have maintained that antique feeling while yet modernizing the interior with plumbing, electricity, and all other modern conveniences. Not only that, but there is also an appeal to the artists too - there is a studio and gallery in one of the rooms, exhibiting one of the owner's own pieces.

There are a variety of rooms available, with a bathroom and kitchen on each level. The rooms are outfitted with cute carpets and bunk beds, and are quite spacious. The main living area is a great hang-out to meet the other travelers, with plenty of couches, chairs, a backgammon game, a computer with internet access, and even a piano!

One of the definite perks at Chillawhile Backpackers is the tea and coffee policy. True to the New Zealand hospitality, there is tea and coffee set out free of charge all day long! The breakfast included with stay typically consists of toast (along with butter, peanut butter, jam, etc), granola, and milk. It's hearty and healthy, preparing one for a day of exploring the local town.

There are several points of interest nearby, including the Elephant Rocks and a seal colony. The downtown is definitely worth exploring and take the time to poke your head into some of the mom-and-pop stores.

Chillawhile Backpackers is a hidden jewel among hostels. The owners are incredible, the house is beautiful, and the entire place is charming. Don't miss it!

I really had to comment on this backpackers as it is our first experience of taking a child to a backpackers and I am so impressed by the response we received here. My son had a ball and wants to go back again. The hosts are very friendly and it is a lovely environment. I would love to recommend chillawhile to anybody traveling with or without children. A++++.

We recently visited Oamaru, where we stayed for a few days at the Chillawhile. We found it to be a friendly creative atmosphere and the host was wonderful and helpful. Taxis are cheap and if you prefer to walk, town is just a few minutes away. The architecture there was amazing and the Chillawhile expressed much of this. The beautiful, big old house gave off a certain surreal vibe. And it had an enormous sense of history. Unfortunately the Gallery was not quite finished while we were there. But it definitely had all the makings of a bright and creative Gallery atmosphere. Being an Artist myself, I would love to have some of my work hanging there for others to enjoy. And I would encourage other artists to do the same. I would personally like to thank the host/hostess for making our stay in Oamaru a pleasant one and we look forward to catching up with them again when we are back in Oamaru in the near future. Love & Light, Neal & Bridget.
