This artsy and cosy hostel is a perfect match for all backpackers! The hostel is a local historic landmark as it is in a renovated house from the early 1900s. The owners have maintained that antique feeling while yet modernizing the interior with plumbing, electricity, and all other modern conveniences. Not only that, but there is also an appeal to the artists too - there is a studio and gallery in one of the rooms, exhibiting one of the owner's own pieces.
There are a variety of rooms available, with a bathroom and kitchen on each level. The rooms are outfitted with cute carpets and bunk beds, and are quite spacious. The main living area is a great hang-out to meet the other travelers, with plenty of couches, chairs, a backgammon game, a computer with internet access, and even a piano!
One of the definite perks at Chillawhile Backpackers is the tea and coffee policy. True to the New Zealand hospitality, there is tea and coffee set out free of charge all day long! The breakfast included with stay typically consists of toast (along with butter, peanut butter, jam, etc), granola, and milk. It's hearty and healthy, preparing one for a day of exploring the local town.
There are several points of interest nearby, including the Elephant Rocks and a seal colony. The downtown is definitely worth exploring and take the time to poke your head into some of the mom-and-pop stores.
Chillawhile Backpackers is a hidden jewel among hostels. The owners are incredible, the house is beautiful, and the entire place is charming. Don't miss it!
